We rarely (as in never, hardly ever) stay in a B and B but TripAdvisor’s write up of Catlins Retreat, a heritage building, was hard to pass up. And we weren’t disappointed. A gracious spacious room, our pre-Christmas accommodation included a writing desk by the front window, an extra bed for a third person, and an ensuite bathroom. Great shower with plenty of hot water and pressure.
Still adjusting to an unusually cold Kiwi summer, we were glad of the heating in the bedroom and a blower heater in the bathroom. Starting life as a doctor’s house, the current day 'Retreat' has ducted heating throughout, thanks to a wood burner/combustion heater (and electric blankets in each room, of course).
We had the guest lounge room to ourselves the night we stayed and came home from a local restaurant to a log fire, an utter luxury for us unit dwellers.
In the morning, we woke to a generous continental breakfast in the heated shared lounge, and struggled to get through a third of what was on offer as we scanned the local TV news.
Our host Robbie couldn’t be more helpful about local sights/sites, and was there when we needed to print, sign and scan a document.
Robbie's guesthouse was a great jumping off point for the Cathedral caves and the Nuggets in particular. NZ with a personal touch, and a great restaurant in easy walking distance.
