The place looks quite dated and needs some TLC. There are a couple of things that don't cost a lot but would go a long way to keeping things clean and newer looking. Deck railing paint for example. It's cheap and would take owners a couple of hours to fix-- even if you have to do it each year. Peeling paint is really not cool. The interior room decor has not updated in what appears to be quite a few years. If nothing else new bedding is in order. There wasn't a hair dryer or coffee maker. I thought it odd because I don't think I've stayed anywhere without those basics. The restaurant wasn't open and there weren't any breakfast items-- even at the beginning part of August so going up or down the road was a requirement. Practically all small establishments offer "continental breakfasts".
Because things are dated its hard to keep them clean and the place shows it. I think a little updating and the place could be a lot nicer and guest friendly.

We've vacationed at the Square Rigger for the last 20 years. Elizabeth is an excellent hostess. The rooms and cabins are very clean and well loved. You're steps from the private, quiet beach and the cool breeze at night. The Square Rigger also has the best fish boil and scenic view. Be sure to arrive very early to take advantage of the view and the atmosphere before the boil and dinner. This is the "quiet side" of Door Co and you're only minutes away from the other side with shopping, restaurants, outdoor movie theater, etc. Bailey's Harbor down the road has plenty of "eats" to and a beautiful Catholic church. Take the challenge...leave the flat screen tv's, ipads, phones, internet at home and "quiet" yourself in this one of a kind setting and go for long walks on the beach and read a book (not a kindle :).

My daughter, granddaughter and I stayed in the 3 bedroom cottage this past weekend. As in the past the accommodations were sparkling clean, very spacious, kitchen was stocked with pots, pans, dishes and even plastic wine glasses. The sand from the lake comes right up to the front door. You hear the waves morning and evening. The sunrise and sunset are beautiful. Everything you need for a wonderful vacation.

Room tip: The two and three bedroom on the lake has the best views.

The Square Rigger is a wonderful place to stay on quiet and beautiful Lake Michigan. My grandparents had a cottage right on the same stretch of beach that we visited every year of my life until their passing. Being able to visit the same hotel on the same beach that I've been to every summer for the past 28 years is wonderful. The staff is so friendly and helpful. The hotel has a fish boil they do three times a night so we get to watch the action even on nights when we aren't eating there (and when we do it is delicious!). Breakfast is served there and is delicious. The rooms are pretty basic but always very clean and tidy. The bottom floor rooms are the best for sitting outside and letting the kids run on the wonderful grass lawn. The beach is wonderfully calm and usually pretty empty. There are chairs and sand toys for using. The stars at night are phenomenal, and we ofetn do fireworks and sparklers for fun! The beach is great for walking as well, the creek down at the end is a fun treat for the kids to go exploring. This past year we also took a chance on one of the cottages as our family continues to expand and the cottage was great too as we were able to cook and have a bit more space! Being from the Washington DC area we really enjyoy getting away to this quiet and peaceful place close enough to all the fun attractions Door County has to offer but also removed enough that we really get a chance to get away from the hustle and buslte of the city life and relax. Can not say enough how much we enjoy our stay every year and look forward to returning again and again!!!
