“Obituary”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

We've been to Pepe's many times and have always loved it. BUT...

We went last month and the food was still great but service was a disaster; slow, forgetful, out of common beers and wines.

We were more then willing to give them an "off night" (because the food is still very good), so we went back last night and though the food was still good the service was just as bad. It took 20 minutes just to be able to place our order. We had to request bread. It took 30 minutes for our entrees to come. And prices "off the charts" even for AK.

The food was good, but there are many places in AK with equally good food. The view is great; but the pricing (e.g. $32 for deep fried halibut & chips) and service have made it a bad choice for us. Too many good choices up here.

They've had 2 male servers for several years that we have not seen in our last 2 visits. Don't know if that is related.

“Very good, but too expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

The food was delicious. We had mussels for an appetizer, and shared two entres: halibut with a morel mushrrom sauce, and scallops wrapped in proscuitto. The food was very, very good. However, the prices were off the charts. As my husband said, "they could charge these prices if the restaurant were at the top of a mountain."

“Worth a Try”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

A group of us friends have been trying out different restaurants in the Anchorage area with a review book in hand. We used a Groupon to try out this place, and were quite pleased with our dining experience. White table clothes, flaming fireplace added to the classy, Alaskan atmoshere. We had no issues with the service. Two from our party ordered the famous Paella, which if you want to order you should call in advance because it does take 50 minutes to cook, and were disappointed with it when it finally arrived. Not only was it expensive, but it was dry and not as flavorful as they had hope. The Turnagain Chicken was FANTASTIC, one of the best entries I have tasted anywhere in Anchorage! Most would consider the restaurant to be on the pricy side, probably not a place I would take small children, but we will definitely go back.

“Not Quite A Disaster, But Pretty Darn Close! :-(”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

Ever since Turnagain House was under new ownership, my husband & I had wanted to check it out for a very long time. Remembering the good ol' days of Turnagain House, I really hoped that this "new" owner who is classically trained would make a great place even better. Finally, the opportunity presented itself (thanks to Groupon!) and away we went for their Paella special.

Good Stuff: The ambiance of the place was kicked up a notch with a nice subtle Spanish/Mediteranian flare. A variety of nice music playing softly. Happy to see pretty much the original furnishings/adornments were kept, including the nice little bar tucked away in the back. We really wanted to eat outside, but it was just a tad too cold and still drying out from raining all day, so we were sat by the window.

Bad Stuff: Our waiter was slower than slow and we could never quite get his attention. While he was attending only 3 tables (and all of us were having the same problem), the other waitress was attending everyone else with ease. I was almost tempted to ask her to take over our table! Tapas plate consisted of 2 ends of a bagette with gritty potato salad. The Paella was loaded with oil, gritty and 1/3 of it was charred to death with rubbery tasteless seafood. Sangria was very watery and the glass was packed with ice. When I asked that the Sangria be reserved without ice, we were told that was NOT possible. Finally the desert, which was a potentially great desert, served very sloppily on the plate.

We may stop in there for a drink someday just to watch the sun set...but I doubt it.

“Great view, nice ambiance, good food, way overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

We bought a Groupon that purported to deliver $133 worth of food for $50. The Groupon required advance reservations (do they turn some Groupon people away even though they have open tables?) and we called eight times between 4 and 6 o'clock (Recording: "please call after 3 pm.") We decided to try an end-around by reserving through opentable.com and putting "groupon" in the remarks. That worked although we feared being turned away.

The physical plant is great with an outstanding view of Turnagain Arm. The service was pretty good and the waiters were well dressed and professional.

The meal consisted of a basket of very good bread, a couple glasses of Sangria (good tasting but glass was packed with ice, leaving little room for drink), and some tapas, a small plate of fried bread and some kind of deep-fried mystery balls that were OK.

The main course was their famous paella. Not bad, kinda skimpy on the seafood. We took home half. The dessert flan was pretty good.

Overall, not a bad deal for $50, but certainly not worth much more. We won't return without a great coupon.
