We stayed at Hitgehiem for 2 nights at the beginning of August and found it to be just as described in the website, a hidden secret. How long it remains that way I don't know as it is certainly a place to stay if you like comfort, great views and solitude.
The location is set high up on the hillside overlooking the valley, citrus farms and river. It's about 6km from the main road along a dirt track but easy to drive. Another sign or two might be useful but if you don't see a Hitgeheim sign just follow signs for Lodge (we didn't realise it was the same place at first and needed to ask).
Rooms are individually styled chalets, large bedrooms and fantastic bathrooms. Our son's room even had outside shower although too cold to use it!
Grounds are superb with nice pool, sun beds etc. and staff very attentive.
Nice walk also around the farm which takes about half an hour and well marked so follwoing the map is easy.
We ate one night at Hitgeheim and found the food to be very good with excellent choice of wine from the cellar beforehand. Ronel the chef helpded us choose and advise on the best wine to accompany the meal. It is a set menu so no choice, but having said that you can decide each morning whether to eat in or not. Drinks before dinner are served in a very comforatble lounge. Dinner cost us R180pp and wine about R240 which compared to other very nice restaurants we ate in was at the top end in terms of price. But the food, surroundings and atmosphere were good and it saved a 30 minute drive elsewhere after a long day.
We ate at a local restaurant called Lenmore's the second night as the menu at Hitgeheim didn't really attract us, which was very nice and offered good choice of home cooking.
We were the only guests staying so whilst the attentiveness of the staff can't be faulted found the fact someone was always standing watching, ready to fill our glass etc. a little off putting, but this is not their fault.
Breakfasts were good but didn't offer as much choice as elsewhere in terms of buffet, but again, very nice.
We took a guided trip to Addo which was good but was more than advertised on the websitewhen booked, apparently costs had been increased before web could be updated. I think this could be done direct with Addo or one of the tour guides on the web for less.
All in all a greta place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Not sure it's the place for families or teenagers other than for one or two nights as it fairly formal. We would certainly consider a return visit though.
Like most things you get what you pay for. This was probably one of the more expensive places we stayed, not necessarily the best but certainly comes highly recommended.
