“Wonderful location for Addo and Scotia reserves”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2011

Would highly recommend a stay here. We stayed for a couple of nights a part of a tour group while visiting the Addo (25 minutes drive ) and Scotia (45 minutes - well worth a visit to almost guarantee the big 5) reserves. Its about an hour's drive from Port Elizabeth.

There are a number of lodges on the hillside and other down near the river where we stayed about a 10 minute walk from the main house where breakfast is served (worth it) . The kids loved it and it was one of their favourite places on the garden route as it was right by a river with an adventure playground and trampoline. There were canoes to use on the river too. Best of all for the kids was that their beds were up in a loft under a thatched roof which made it all the more exciting. There were three mattresses up there. A fourth could probably have been squeezed in. On the ground floor was a double bed and a small kitchenette all nicely appointed

The owners were wonderful and very welcoming and the only thing stopping us giving a 5 star rating was the lack of heating in the cabin which made things rather nippy at night (warm up in the loft) as it was winter but that was equally a common issue with other places we stayed along the garden route. Would happily stay here again even without the safari as the main attraction.

A very nice place with various types of accommodation available. I had a room in the main house with ensuite. Cabins looked great too. Lovely setting on the river with a lot of bird life. Orange orchards. Working farm. Conveniently located near Addo. Definitely would stay there again.

We arrived late after a day in the national park - our room was wonderful, however the door that leads to the communal kitchen was open and someone had use or shower and towels and left a mess! Was not a good first impression but besides that - it was a beautiful farm and would recommend if you need a place in addo.

We stayed at Avoca over the World Cup. I was initially disappointed because I wanted to stay at Addo Elephant Park, but it was completely booked. I am so glad it was, because we found a gem in Avoca! Dave and Judy have recently refurbished the cabins, and they are absolutely lovely, comfortable, and EXTREMELY reasonably priced. But the best part was Dave and Judy! They invited us into their home both nights to watch the World Cup matches on TV with them, gave us free oranges from the orchard on their property, and were just generally accommodating and lovely. I've already recommended Avoca to a few friends heading to SA and would commend it to anyone heading out to Addo as well.

We needed somewhere to stay near Port Elizabeth during the World Cup and everywhere in the town was very expensive. We found Avoca River Cabins, it's definitely out in the countryside but the cabins are nice. You couldn't stay there without a car or some kind of transport and there are no shops close by. But it's scenic and different and very reasonable rates.

We visited the Addo area primarily to visit the Addo Elephant National Park. Avoca, located about 15 minutes drive from the park entrance makes a perfect location between the town of Kirkwood and the park. Full self catering facilities allow you to do a nice braai (BBQ) and there are also locally available restaurants. We stayed in one of the riverside tree house style facilities and I would recommend them to anyone. These facilities could hold a small family and are great value for money, clean and very comfortable. The deck patios make an excellent spot to enjoy a meal or just relax, read and take in the sounds of the river valley. There's access to the Sundays river with kayaks available for use. The manager, Riaan, was very helpful with helping us get acquainted with the area and helping us to setup game drives into Scotia private game reserve (also highly recommended).
