“Great stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

We stayed here for 6 days (booked and paid for 5 but a flight delay gave us a 6th day at Air NZ's cost) and had a fantastic time.

Our Garden Superior room was spacious and comfortable and having a fridge was very handy. The air-con was rather loud, but effective. We turned it off at the unit at night and slept with just the ceiling fan which was much quieter. It is recommended to boil water or to buy bottled - we used the jug to boil ours. The bed had some sort of design to specially transmit and amplify every movement across to your sleeping partner, resulting in some disturbed sleep, but it is only 3 1/2 star and we weren't expecting 5 star luxury! The Beachfront rooms had better views but nowhere is more than a minute or so walk to the beach, and the garden rooms offer some very nice quiet secluded locations (although hubby was woken by the roosters).

Almost all the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. Unfortunately one staff member in the restaurant was consistently grumpy. eg while having dinner at indoor seating in the restaurant we approached her and asked if we could get a menu. She waved towards the outdoor seating and said "they're on the tables outside." We went for a look outside but there were no menus on any of the nearby tables there either. We eventually borrowed one off another diner.

However this woman was the exception and everyone else was fantastic.

Breakfast was good with a selection of cereals (ricies, cornflakes, cocoa pops, weet bix, two types of museli and a couple of others) and fruit (mostly looked to be out of tins but some was fresh), yoghurt, one type of muffin (different each day), bread/toast, and juices. There were probably hot drinks available although I didn't notice. Sometimes there was a lack of cutlery but this was always quickly rectified on approaching the staff. Other meals at the on site restaurant were also OK although I didn't think anything was fantastic except for the wedges and smoothies. The other restaurant on site, the Spaghetti House, was pretty good and we ate there a couple of times.

We didn't swim in the pool, which was usually occupied by kids while the adults relaxed at the restaurant tables nearby. The kids were certainly having a good time.

It was very handy having Polynesian Rentals right on site. We took a scooter out on three different days to explore the island. Except for a few small grocery/liquor shops and some restaurants there is not a lot in walking distance of Edgewater, although we enjoyed a walk up Hospital Hill.

The beach was fantastic for snorkelling and watching fish, with loads of colourful tropical species within 5 metres of the waterline. It wasn't all that far out to the reef and the end of the swimming area, and at low tide most of the swimming area was quite shallow (about waist depth; I am 160cm). (We also tried out a beach at the western end of the south coast which had more room for swimming and also lots of fish, although you had to go a little bit further out to find them. Both were better than Muri Beach in our opinion, where we saw virtually no fish until we got out past the islands. However Muri did offer more in the way of other activities eg kayak and SUP hire and lagoon/snorkelling tours.)

Overall we had a great trip and if returning to Rarotonga I would certainly consider staying at Edgewater again.

Room Tip: Request a quiet room away from the bar and pool if this is important to you. They host a lot of wedd...

We thank you for taking the time to post your review on tripadvisor while you stayed with us here at The Edgewater Resort & Spa. Our garden superior room you stayed in is nestled in our tropical gardens, with not more than a five minute walk to our lagoon from your room that is filled with colorful fish as you experienced while snorkeling in front of the resort, and having a variation of room categories that cater for all budgets, if you would like to experience the lagoon views your next stay with us. Our staff as you advised are happy and welcoming with an exception of one staff member, this will be discussed this with our staff, to ensure our team provides the hospitality we are known for.
We look forward to welcoming you back to our shores.

This is our 4th time back and what a disappointment! We love this resort and that is why we keep coming back. We arrived at 4.30am and were barely greeted at reception, first day we waited 3/4 hour our tuna steak salad lunch only to find out the waiter hadn't even put our order in! (When it finally arrived it was yum though however we ordered again for dinner the next night and had to send it back as it wasn't cooked properly and was horrible plus only half a steak each, only to have the same steaks returned overcooked!). On 2 occasions we ordered coffee and had to wait for over 1/2 hour first time as staff who took order went on break and didn't put our order in first, and then second time 20 min wait in a near empty restaurant! The staff mostly seem uninterested and unhappy - not like we are used to. I am all for greeting in the wonderful island way - Kia Orana. However mostly this was returned with Hello or Hi ... where has the island spirit gone from this resort???!!! Housekeeping was fantastic and a big thankyou to our housekeeper Vaine - she always greeted us with the biggest of smiles and lovely warm Kia Orana! Fab to see that our lovely friend Tiki Daniels is still Activity's Director and doing an awesome job as per usual (with his wonderful greeting of "Welcome Home" to us)!! Lovely to catch up again with Lina and her friendly helpful manner and the lovely William who is always so lovely. Lia is new to the resort but she definitely did her best to make sure that when she was around we got the service, smile, friendliness and warmth that we were accustomed to from Edgewater. The warmth has gone from the tropics!! Bring it back PLEASE!!!!

Room Tip: Make sure you don't get put in the 9000 or 900 block - the 4000 block is lovely and so are the 3...

We enjoyed our stay here, the room was basic but clean. The beach was nice and the snorkling was very good too. They have plenty of activities to enjoy at the resort. The staff are friendly. If your in the NZDF or police take advantage of the extra deal the resort offers found on their website.

Arrived in Rarotonga early morning. Tired after flying from Toronto via Los Angeles.
Public Holiday and unsure about buses so started walking to the Edgewater.
A kind Government employee, Isaac, driving to his nearby office, gave us a lift, saying " It's Island hospitality ". We subsequently found the Islanders to be good natured and pleasant.
Most guests rented card or mopeds ( test required ) but we circled the Island using 10 trip bus tickets.
Enjoyed 2 tours, Jeep Safari and Lagoon Cruise.
Inquired about a day trip to Aitutaki but flights cancelled - short of pilots !
Very hot but not humid.
Walked to the waterfall ( almost dry ) and would have liked to have crossed the Island but tracks not well marked. Perhaps the Tourist Office could look in to this.

Thank you for posting your review on The Edgewater Resort & Spa, we are so happy to hear you enjoyed your stay on the island, the hospitality of the locals, and all the tour excursions we have to offer. It is a pity you did not get to venture to Aitutaki as you would of loved the outer islands.
We hope you can return back to our shores in the near future.

We traveled with 2 other couples, and stayed in the garden rooms. We had 3 rooms all next to each other as requested. The rooms were very clean and very pleasant. Rooms were very big, with loads of storage for putting your stuff away, which is great for extended stays. A/C as well as ceiling fan. Tea and coffee supplied and a fridge.
Grounds were meticulously maintained, and afforded good privacy whilst sitting outside on our deck ( we were ground floor ).
Restaurant was good, and the food of a good standard and well priced.
Staff were without exception very pleasant and helpful.
The beach is small, but nice, and the snorkeling is good at high tide.
Scooter hire is available on site, with temporary Raro licence issued until you go to town to get proper one.
HOWEVER.....the paths around the entire resort are concrete with inset crazy paving of white tiles. These become lethally slippery when wet. The resort is aware of this, and has signs everywhere warning of this, but why persist with them when they are so slippery? I would suggest they apply a layer of clear resin, with a fine sprinkle of fine grit whilst wet, and that would solve the problem, whilst still looking very nice.
At check out, we had an issue with the bill, they had overcharged me on the room rate ( we had booked direct ), and I had to show them a copy of my confirmation before they would listen to me. It took over an hour of aggravation before I finally got them to understand, and they then adjusted the account after some further ado. Even then it was different to what it should have been, but in my favour to the tune of about $150.00. I pointed this out ( fairs fair ) and to their credit they said that was OK and we settled. Our two lots of friends also had issues.

When all is said and done, I would happily stay again as it is a very nice resort and represents very good value...just watch the paths when its raining and check your bill!

Room Tip: Having a ground floor room is handy and possibly more private then the others. In the week we were t...

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. We are happy to hear you and your friends enjoyed your stay with us as well as the amenities we provided in your rooms, also the acknowledgment of our reservations team being able to assist with all your rooms being next to each other. We will look into our reservations systems to see where the breakdown was upon your check out as this happens on the rare occasion and we are glad this was rectified on checkout, we will seriously look into this as we do not want this to jeopardize our service in the future. We appreciate your feedback on the tiles, this is the reason why we have signage, and will take into consideration your comments. We hope you will be able to come back and visit us in the near future.

Stayed recently in a Garden Room. While the bathroom was a little dated the room was a great size, the outlook wonderful. Our son and his family were staying in the Oneroa Villas overlooking the wedding "square". A wonderful place for kids... saw our grandchildren at meal time. The activities for the kids were, for the most part, an education in themselves.
Our only negative - it can get a bit noisy at night when guests sit out on their balconies after 10pm talking loudly. Sound does carry by the water and we had several nights of disturbed sleep due to inconsiderate guests talking loudly. A noise policy would have improved our stay and would not be unexpected in areas where families are sleeping.

Room Tip: A lagoon room would be preferable as you wouldn't get the noise of 2am passengers arriving.

We appreciate you taking the time for posting your comments on tripadvisor. We are glad you enjoyed your holiday here with your family, and the kids club is a highlight for the children when they come here, interacting with our staff and other children travelling with our many activities we have in place . With our noise policies we do have a noise restriction in place and only need to have our front office notified.
We do hope in the near future you return to our shores

We stayed at the Edgewater for our son in laws 40th birthday there were 16 of us. We stayed in the 3 bedroom villas which were very spacious but the some of the furnishings a bit dated. We were told our linen would be changed every 3 days but in our villa we only had one change in 9 days. The staff were friendly but lacking in supervision and the dining area could do with a bit of TLC. The food was good particularly the buffets, happy hour with half price cocktails was sometimes a bit of a bun fight with the staff run off their feet but it was still service with a smile. Overall we had a great time and will go back.

Room Tip: The 3 bedroom villas are ideal for families as the are fully self contained and as is it says only a...

We thank you for taking the time to post your review. We are glad you and your family enjoyed your holiday with us and being in the three bedroom villas that is fully self contained for families is your home away from home. We appreciate your comments regarding the linen change in your villa and will be sure to discuss this further with our housekeeping team. Our buffets are a highlight for many guests as well as the cocktail hour, this is our busiest time at the restaurant and the staff do try their best to provide speedy service. We do hope you enjoyed the fabulous sunsets we get while drinking your cocktail and enjoying the overlapping waves on the beach.
We hope to see you and your family in the near future.
