We stayed at the Edgewater Resort for 5 nights in September 2007 while attending our friends wedding, which was being held there. We arrived at about 3am in the morning, and were greeted at the lovely check in desk by the staff, who you would never guess it was 3am in the morning by dealing with! They were lovely. Got a rather 'interesting' ride to our room with our luggage in a golf cart - which was much nicer than having to lug it around the resort, but the driver was pissed as a chook! Very lovely guy and hilarious though, and we did not mind at all! He even held a torch light on us until we got in the door all alright.

We were staying in one of the studio apartments. The room itself was great - plenty of room, had everything you needed in the little kitchen, it was clean and had a new bathroom, and the air con was already going for us when we arrived.

Had a hilarious episode with the bed though, as we finally lay down to rest, and BANG! half the bed fell down! Turned out the bed leg on one side had unwound itself, but we just put it back on, no worries.

The netting on the windows was torn a bit though - making them redundant, but the AC worked fine (frickin' cold sometimes even!) so that was no worry to us.

One night we woke up to the sound of our neighbours TV blaring (the walls were a little thin, and people in the lower apartments said that they heard people stomping above them - so try to get one on the upper floor like us!) but we rang the reception, who gave the guy a call straight away and asked him to turn it down, which he did.

So the rooms were great. On to the resort.

The beach front is lovely! Not to say it was one of the best in Raro - but you are so close to some of the nicer beachfronts, so who cares! The grooms Dad spent most of his time there snorkelling, so that mustn't of been too bad!

The pool was great, and they dont close it (we took a 2am dip!) This might frustrate the people with pool rooms, but was great for the rest of us!

Staff were all lovely that we encountered. One of the wedding party can certainly vouch for that! *wink*

The restaurant was great, breakfast adequate, but 2 things to note:

1) Order the kiddie meals - they are HUGE and way cheaper for virtually the same thing on the adult menu. I think we may have annoyed the staff after awhile, but the food was great and so cheap!

2) THE DRINKS ARE VERY STRONG!!! Rarotonga is a drinking country. If you are used to city bars which give you the tiniest hint of alcohol and a whole lot of mix - this is NOT the case in Rarotonga! I actually had to abandon one of my Happy Hour cocktails (the Shark Repellent!!!) because, even after getting them to add more mix, it was just too strong! So be wary of that when you order your drinks haha. But in saying that, they are also very cheap for what you get - so drink up!

And watching the humpback whales passing by the restaurant while you have your breakfast is just AMAZING!!!

We charged everything to the room (boy, that was fun - until the bill!) and when we went over the invoice, they hadnt overcharged us for anything.

With regards to the wedding - it was lovely. It was right on the beachfront, there was a lovely hand-made flower arch, and the reception was set away from the restaurant in its own Bure, with the most amazing food and entertainment. They even supplied us with a little stereo once the live entertainment and dancing wound up.

So all in all, we certainly enjoyed our stay at the Edgewater, and encountered nothing really that we can fault them on! Enjoy your stay there!!!

  • Liked — The staff, the rooms, the beach, the food - everything was great!
  • Disliked — Nothing really! Bed falling down was a bit funny!

We stayed at the Edgewater resort for 2 weeks on our honeymoon. we were upgraded (without even us mentioning anything to them) to a beachfront room, which was amazing.. we had a nice fruit basket and a bottle of wine waiting for us upon our arrival.
The room was nice. It had a balcony overlooking the beach, the swimming pool and the restaurant. It was clean and the A/C worked well (couldn't do without it). The room got cleaned everyday, with new towels everyday.

Breakfast was excellent, alot of variety. cereal, toasts, spreads and pastry.
Different dinner themes every night.. it was wonderful. we only ate out of the resort on 2 occasions when we decided to try the spaghitti house, and another place in Avarua town.

There were activities organised by the resort, but we didn't do any, we did our own touring on the scooter which we hired from the resort (a bonus). I woudl recommend the Reef2sea. it wasnt done through the resort, but externally, the boat take you outside the reef and you do the snorkelling in different spots, we were lucky enough to see an octupus.

Overall, loved the place,t he staff are really friendly. a nice cosey room overlooking the beach.. Although it's been nearly 3 years, but I still think of the view from our balcony out to sea.. Priceless.

We stayed at the Edgewater Resort after our plane was delayed leaving Rarotonga. We only stayed for the one night during the delay but I was so appauled by this place I thought it was worth reviewing.

The resort in general was pretty old and run down, it was in need of some significant maintanance and renovation. It was probably nice 10 years ago but looks quite shabby now.

We stayed in a basic unit as we were delayed which was one of the worst places I've stayed in years. The air con did not work and the ceiling fan was pretty old and slow. The toilet barely flushed, the towels smelt of sick and there was an unidentifiable brown liquid leaking from the fridge. The whole room which had apparently been cleaned was dirty and the furniture was in worse shape than in my old student flat.

The pool area is slightly better but the beach is one of the worst spots on the island. Much better to be further round nearer to Muri beach, away from the rocks and closer to better snorkeling.

The food in the resort was overpriced but the Spagetti House attached to the hotel was really good. Overall, a terrible place to stay, you can do much better on Rarotonga. The smaller hotels and villas are well looked after and are much better value for money. It may be cheap to stay at this place but you'll probably be dissapointed. I was relieved we only stayed for one night and it was paid for by Air NZ. We couldn't wait to leave!!

  • Disliked — Poor cleanliness of the room and resort in general

This was our first trip to the Cook Islands and we both loved it! Being that we had never been there before and not having much advice from people we were happy with our choice of the Edgewater. It was not as nice in appearance as some of the others, but I guess that is why it was cheaper in cost.
The price of food is extremely expense everywhere on the island. So the food at the hotel wasnt anymore or anyless in price then anywhere else. The pool area was small but nice overlooking the ocean it had BEAUTIFUL sunsets everynight!!
The rooms were average, very clean, air conditioning worked. We had a garden view room which was nice, the grounds weren't as lush and green as some of the other resorts, I dont think the ocean view rooms would have been worth the extra money.
The hotel's beach isnt the greatest on the island, it was very rocky and is near the shorter part of the lagoon. besides that though the snokeling was still good there, just make sure to have some water shoes!
It was really quiet while we were there which was nice but it is the largest resort on the island and if it was filled to capacity or even 3/4 full it would have been way too crowded for the kind of trip we were looking for. Thankfully we were there in their quiet time (feb-mar) I dont even think it was half full.
The hotel puts on an island night twice a week, with an amazing buffet dinner and great local island dancing.
They also offered scooter rentals on site which was the BEST thing we could have done!! We usually took the scooter out to a different beach everyday and hung out there for the day. Being that is only takes about 40 min to drive around the entire island in scooter we were able to check out all parts of the island.
I would recommend this hotel to people on a bit of a budget and willing to leave the resort to find a nicer beach.

My husband and I picked the edgewater resort for our first stay in the cook islands. The resort is huge which was good and the hotel staff were so friendly.

Our first night, we stayed in a studio unit, which is very average - the aircon hardly worked and the furniture was very old and not as flash as the photo suggested. The photo that shows the room is actually in fact a delux room so dont be fooled by that.

We were upgraded to a delux room for the rest of our stay which was fantastic. They have an amazing island night which is defintely recomended as a must see. They have heaps of activities on site and an excellant buffet breakfast of fresh fruit cereal toast etc.

Another bonus we found was that the the island activities can be booked on site through budget which is situated on the resort. We also hired out a car which I recomened is the easiest way to get around.

Overall I would give the edgewater a 4/5 for our stay. Definetly recomended for first timers.
