My partner and I spent Christmas 2011 in the Edgewater Resort & Spa (booked from 23rd December returning on 30th December 2011). I had never visited Rarotonga before although I had heard many good things about both the country itself and the Edgewater Resort hence us booking Christmas here.
The resort is approximately 10 mins coach journey away from Rarotonga airport which to me was a big plus as I do not enjoy coach trips one bit! Upon arrival at the hotel, we were dealt with quickly and efficiently by the friendly staff and taken by a golf buggy to our Garden Room. The room was a good size and very clean and tidy, unfortunately my partner discovered a significant number of ants in the bed which immediately sent me to the phone to ask for a room change (sorry, but I have a low tolerance level to such things). The staff were again incredibly friendly and helpful and within no more than 10 minutes a member of staff was there to help us move to another room. The next room was slightly bigger and there was no ant problem here! The room looked straight onto the beach and had a small patio area with a table and chairs. The bathroom was a good size and there was plenty of wardrobe space and a safe. The main bedroom area was substantial and had a television, double bed, single bed and good air conditioning (a must as the temperatures were sticky at night).
There was one restaurant/bar area which had chairs and tables both inside and out to suit every need. The bar did a half price cocktail deal from 5pm-6pm each evening and also had Island nights each week (which due to their popularity must be booked in advance). The restaurant menu was very varied and included salads, pastas, steaks; pretty much catering for every taste. The food itself was absolutely excellent restaurant quality food - we did not have one bad meal there in the 5 nights that we stayed. On Christmas day both for Lunchtime and Evening there was a special Christmas menu which again was excellent.
If you fancied a change from the hotel restaurant, there is also a neighbouring Itailan restaurant (approximately 5 minutes walk up the hotel driveway) called the Spagetti house. The food was good here but not in the same league as the hotel restaurant. Also, this restaurant was very hot and didnt appear to have adequate air conditioning.
We avoided the hotel's main pool area basically because it was overrun with children (no offence, just prefer the quiet!) but the area was very pleasant and again clean and tidy. I had a pedicure at the spa which was very nice and I was pleasant surprised by the reasonable prices offered here.
Overall, other than the bad weather (unfortunately December is the beginning of the typhoon season), we had a truly excellent holiday. I would definitely recommend the Edgewater Resort & Spa and will be returning there in the future.
