“Hopefully not ship-wrecked”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2015

Every one of the 13 times we have been to Raro we have been to the Shipwreck Bar. The previous owner was a charismatic fellow from Hawaii and his "sea captain" appearance and colorful personality was perfect for the place. The setting, cocktails and staff were wonderful even if the food menu a bit average.
We went back this time and it "met" the new owners, who some reviewers here have lauded. Sorry i cant agree. The place was empty, void of the colorful locals who always seemed to frequent the bar and add to the atmosphere. The new owners were not welcoming at all, in fact the woman totally ignored me as i stood at the bar about 2 feet from her. Even one of the lovely staff observing from a distance rolled her eyes at the snub, knowing i was a "regular".
We were not tempted to stay and eat there, even though it was BBQ night which is traditionally a lot of fun. The bar food menu had not been updated, something it desperately needs.
This place is an institution on the Rock, so i hope the new owners learn a bit more about the basics of "hospitality" - as it would be very very sad to see it sink.

Kia Orana. Thank you for your review, we appreciate you taking the time to post your feedback.

The time when you visited was probably during the final week of the cricket World Cup and many people who would normally have come to the Shipwreck Hut for the BBQ and drinks actually went to venues where they could watch the cricket on TV, so it was a little quieter than usual.

At the bar we endeavour to serve all our customers in turn and in a timely manner. We can therefore only apologise if you felt that you were being ignored if you were not served immediately.

In terms of food, our bar menu is very popular (although not available on BBQ evenings) and we agree with Jim, the previous owner, that it is appropriate for a beach bar.

We are new to hospitality, as you know, and we are learning all the time so thanks again for your feedback.

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2015

Brilliant place. Drinks great as cocktails are made fresh in jam jars. Beer was cold, food was great all at a good price. Seafood chowder was awesome.

“A little piece of paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2015

We came here because the owner was at the Saturday morning market handing out flyers and singing the places praises. One can sometimes be a bit dubious about this practice... but we chose to go anyway and must say our evening was definitely a highlight of our stay in Raro. The seafood BBQ was pretty good, don't expect a huge meal though, the first rounds are fairly rationed. I was happy about that but hubby would have liked more. Anyway, that said, the place is gorgeous, right on the beach and just a stunning spot.
We were treated to Papa Jake singing (he is the delightful man that welcomes every plane to the island with his ukulele serenade at the airport) and 2 of the local girls, one of whom danced for us and the other accompanied Papa Jakes singing. The atmosphere was one of the best I have experienced anywhere and I'd go back in a blink.

“Best spot on the island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2015

The Shipwreck hut is absolutely the best bar on the island! The staff are super lovely and the sunset view is beautiful. If you get a chance to join them on one of there BBQ nights it is totally worth doing, their smoked marlin starter is the best thing you will taste. Highly recommended.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2015

A nice bar and restaurant with decent food at reasonable prices.
They often have entertainment with a local troubadour and are you lucky will the staff sing and dance for you.
