Aroa Kainga was absolutely wonderful! We caught a very late flight in (2am) and Tricia was up to welcome us. We booked very late but Tricia managed to fit us in with 3 nights in the bungalow and 4 in the studio, and we were more than happy. Straight away I noticed how lovely and CLEAN the place was, I hate stray hairs and there was none in site! I can’t stress enough how CLEAN the place was. As other reviews mention Tricia is very helpful and has thought of everything, breakfast things for the first day and all cooking essentials, mosquito coils, fresh fruit (passion fruit vine out front recommended), snorkels, reef shoes, beach mats, sunhats, books etc. Everything was so personal.
The location is great; I think the best part of the island and beautiful beach for snorkelling. The Bus stops at the end of the road with very regular times but we hired scooters great fun. Muri beach isn’t far away which is lovely but a bit touristy and catches the prevailing wind, as soon as we came back to ‘our’ beach NO WIND and magic sunsets. It was lush. Spent most evenings watching the sun go down with a Mutatu beer and even saw whales just outside the reef! Very, very good restaurant nearby called Vaimas, so good we went twice and very reasonably priced for the quality.
A few things to note:
If you want to hire a scooter you need to get it first (to do the skills test) before you go to the police station to get your license and take your passport. We hired from Polynesian rental in town but they let us drop off at any office after hours.
If you want to do the cross island walk wear proper shoes, jandels don’t really cut it, can be a little bit scary with some shear drops but beautiful and well worth doing.
Yes there are roosters, and fires, and dogs but it wouldn’t be Rarotonga without them and you should not be put off.
Looking through the visitor books I only saw great comments and quite a few from people who have stayed more than once. Obviously they enjoyed the stay and so did we, we highly recommend it. Fantastic place!!!
