“Fabuloso”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

We stayed in the bigger Ibesa with amazing hammocks. We stayed upstairs in a private room with two beds for $5 a night. The family was amazingly and super helpful. The entire place was very clean and bug free. WiFi was amazing with a great strong signal. The water went out once but they had a tank that they turned on until it came back. Electricity also went out one night but there was an amazing view of the stars that made it worth it. Also, they promptly found and lit candles.

The friendliness of the staff/owners and the fact you see them cleaning a lot definitely rule here. Honestly, they're very very nice people and besides that they keep the place safe day and night. Besides that, just expect what's fair for US$ 5 per night.

Room Tip: There a two buildings, the new (big) one is further from the center but has a big common area with h...

Hostel Ibesa was the best! I was with 3 friends staying in the bigger Ibesa. Even with other people staying at the hostel it was quiet and relaxed. Carlos, the owner, was one of the most welcoming, kindest people I've ever met! If I go back to Ometepe I would absolutely stay here. This hostel is very cheap and Carlos even gave us a great deal on bicycles and connected us with a guide for hiking Volcan Concepcion. When I wasn't feeling well one night, Carlos made sure I was okay before he went back to the other Ibesa a couple blocks away. I could have stayed at Ibesa for weeks! Great hammocks too :)

Room Tip: All of the rooms are great and there is a variety of different setups!

We booked the original building but were offered to stay in the new building which is about 5blocks away. The new building is where we stayed, it was more open space than the original building. But it had less of a breeze and seemed more hot. beds were not so good and we were woken up a lot by roosters crowing all night long, dogs barking and mangos falling on the tin roof every time the wind blew. My suggestion is to stay on the bottom floor even tho there are no windows.
The people are really really nice, cleaning staff was friendly and always cleaning. The water has issues staying on but they are fixing it. There is a pump that needs to run when ever you use the water and they turn it off at night so it's by request to turn it back on. Still working out the links of the new building. The kitchen works but is very basic.
The WiFi was strong when they had it on, they turn that off at night too.
There is no fridge.
Tip: everyone paid a different price which means you should bargain. We paid $7 per person for a private when pre booking and a walk in only paid $5 for a single private.

Carlos and his partner have expanded and now have a larger building that is a little bit away from the center of town. We stayed here for three nights and had a pleasant stay. The ladies who were there to help cleaned the place everyday and were always eager to help out. They only spoke Spanish, but we managed. There is a kitchen to cook, but not many pots, pans, etc. so don't try to make anything elaborate. There is also no refrigerator, which is typical on the island. Wifi worked and the fan in our room was very powerful. The rooms in the original place seem to be a little cooler with a strong breeze, but the newer place was very quiet (except for the roosters). We asked the ladies if there was a place to buy ice and they said they could buy us a bag and it would only cost 3C, if you stay here, make sure to get ice one night to cool off, it was amazing!
The only downside was that the water in the upstairs shower seemed to have problems some times, but it was fixed every time we ran into an issue.
Finally, it is not uncommon to have a power outage on the entire island, so bring some flash lights. Luckily, Carlos has a bunch of candles for us to use.

We stayed here for a few nights and it was not like I have ever stayed before. First of all this place is super cheap, so the accommodations are basic. The rooms are private ones, however the walls do not go all the way up to the ceilings so it can be noisy if you are first to go to bed. Also, there is chicken wire on the windows, not windows (not uncommon for Nica).

The cool thing about this place is that you are staying in someones home. It is a nice little family with a few kids who help them run the place. The place is super clean, including the bathrooms. There is a nice family room with a kitchen table, kitchen and even computers for your use if you need them.

The uncle that owns the home and his niece (Sydney) toured us up on a hike up the Volcanoe for $10 bucks each. I spoke with the young woman Sydney (15 years old) the entire hike up (grueling hike). She is such an amazing girl. A hard worker and very wise for her age. At the end of my stay at hostel Ibesa, she called me her best friend. I will never forget my time at this hostel and what this family taught me about hard work and what I have to be thankful for. If you want an awesome cultural experience, stay at hostel Ibesa. The aunt even cooked us an incredible breakfast for $2-3 a person.

Great location, clean, safe, incredible family that runs the hostel. WILL RETURN SOMEDAY!

Also, the island is amazing, enjoy your time there!
