“Wonderful place, lovely people!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2011

We stayed for four nights in late March for our wedding anniversary.

Hellifield Peel Castle is unique and it's history is most interesting. The story of it's renovation by Francis and Karen is fascinating. Listening to Francis talk about it, with his gentle dry wit, is most entertaining. Karen is such a kind, pleasant hostess.

After a blissful nights sleep, the HPC breakfast is a grand way to set yourselves up for spending your day in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, charming villages and towns that surround Hellifield.

We shall be back.............if we can find a vacancy!

Room Tip: All the rooms are superb.

We have just stayed here for 2 nights in the 'Old Bedroom'. This is a huge room with massive 4 poster bed. There is a seating area, with coffe table, TV & log burning stove (very nice to light in the evening) also in the room is a fridge with milk and tea making facilites. Cake & shortbread biscuits, were left on the coffee table for us, together with wine, chocolates & fresh flowers. The en-suite wet room is in the tower, which is accessed from the bedroom (no shaver socket). Although there are plenty of windows in the bedroom, it is a little dark during the day because of it's aspect. However there are lovely views from all windows. Karen & Francis (the owners) are very pleasant and keen to talk to you about the building of the castle, which was on the 'Grand Designs' program.

Thank-you so much to Francais and Karen for welcoming us into their home. From the moment we arrived, we were transported into another world - one which we didn't want to leave after our 2 night stay! We stayed in the wonderful attic apartment where there were cupcakes, wine, milk, water and chocolates to greet us. Returning to the room the next day we found delicious shortbread.

Breakfast was a treat - bacon and sausages like no other I have ever tasted, set us up for the day! We watched the Grand Designs DVD which was in the room, this helped us appreciate yet again, what willpower and determination Karen and Francais had.

Don't hesitate to book - 5 star hotels could learn a great deal from Peel Castle, we certainly want to stay again!

I booked our stay at Peel Castle as a surprise for my husband's 50th birthday as he often commented that it was his favourite ever renovation on "Grand Designs". I initially spoke to Karen 2 years before the event and then had to spend the next 24 months trying not to give away the secret to my husband, not an easy thing for me to do! Eventually the date came and we, along with other family members arrived at Peel Castle. We arrived to a very friendly and warm welcome from Karen - we were that blown away when walking through the front door, that I couldn't remember where I'd put the car keys, so spent the next half hour looking for them! We had a guided tour through the house and the quality and standard of all of the rooms were just unbelievable. We stayed in the Attic Apartment - an amazing place with fantastic views, fresh flowers, homemade shortbread, chocolates, lovely fluffy towels, bathrobes and slippers, wine, milk in the fridge - the list goes on. Total luxury. Francis took us on a very interesting guided tour of the outside of the Castle and was very knowledgeable, he's got a great sense of humour, we could have listened to him all day. They have got 6 gorgeous chickens roaming free around the grounds and I love the grey one in particular. I'm sitting here now on our last night wondering how I can smuggle her out in our suitcase when we leave without anyone noticing! Finally the breakfasts are quite simply 5 star. Yoghurt, fresh fruit, cereal, home made museli, full english, half english, poached eggs, boiled eggs - anything we asked for was catered for. Quite simply, we have had a fabulous time in a truly beautiful area of the country, the wait was more than worth it and all 6 of us can't wait to come and visit again. Thanks very much to Karen, Francis and girls for allowing us into your family home and making us feel so comfortable and welcome. Sally & Jack Bennie xxx

We stayed two nights arriving for my birthday on the 29th - what a wonderful place. The weather lovely showing the Autumn colours at their best. We stayed in the Square Bedroom which was everything we expected and more. Karen's breakfasts were beautifully presented and tasty. The wood burner was an added pleasure for the chilly evenings and nothing was too much trouble to make our stay a happy and memorable one. Thank you for the ice bucket Karen.....
We plan to visit again and can recommend Hellifield Peel Castle as a definite place to visit - you will not be disappointed.

After 18 months of anticipation it was fair to say that our expectations for Peel Castle were high however, it simply blew them away. The location is fantastic and the view from the Attic Room has to be seen to be believed. We stayed for four nights, with 3 of those on a self catering basis, and the 4th on bed and breakfast. I had to to the latter as the smell from the kitchen was just to good to not try Karen's cooking for at least one day of the trip.
The local area is beautiful and the people are just so friendly. We did the waterfall walk from Ingleton which was lovely however, there is plenty of choice of equally great trips. We ate in the Maypole which although OK was a little lacking in atmosphere. That said, it was a Monday night in Autumn.
All in all, Peel Castle in a unique place. If you ever have the chance, you simply must stay here at least once. It really is that good.

Celebrated our 21st Wedding Anniversary by staying for one night in the Chapel bedroom and what a wonderful, relaxing experience it was. The red marble bath is luxurious to the point that we had two baths that evening under candlelight.
Karen's hospitality is first class and both herself and Francis are very welcoming and have a friendly nature that welcomes all guests to Peel Castle.Thank you Karen for collecting and dropping off both Elizabeth and myself at Hellifield train station, it was very much appreciated.

Thank you very much for your kind review, we were happy that you could visit by Train to Hellifield Station. The red marble bath was obviously a hit which it great to hear! Lovely that you were both felt relaxed after your stay. Thank you for staying with us and hope to see you both again sometime!

Best Wishes,

Karen & Francis
