“Souless, lacking in character accompanied by rude staff and high prices”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2011

Lacking in character, crammed full of naff art and over priced rooms, really disliked this place and felt very ripped off when I departed. The atmosphere is unwelcoming and the restaurant serves extremely small portions of food. The rooms stink of smoke from the garden and you are kindly kept up all night with the drunk locals bellowing below your bedroom windows! It really is very rough around the edges! I would suggest the Chapel in Bruton for more originality and friendlier service!

I visited the Kings Arms with friends for a Sunday lunch, and sadly was very disapointed, as were my friends. The service was indifferent with two rather unhappy waiters who seemed to think it was a task to do their job! The Maitre De was helpful. The food (Roast Beef) was tough and cold; a small dish of two veg accompanied the meal. The price was excessive. i was ashamed to have recommended the Kings Arms to my friends. I will think twice before returning, such a shame as my previous meals have been excellent

We stayed midweek for one night. Good food in restaurant with helpful and friendly staff/owner. Great shower and nicely decorated room with obviously a great deal of money and effort spent on doing the place up, BUT, dissapointed that we were put in a room with a kitchen extractor running up the corner of the room, bearing in mind the place was virtually empty. My advice would be to avoid turquoise room located above kitchen at all costs unless you want a wake up call at 7.30am when the kitchen extractor goes on. Noise comparable with a ships engine room. I would happily stay again but would make sure I was up the other end of the building.

Room Tip: Not Turquoise

My partner and I stayed for 2 nights over August Bank Holiday - one in the Turquoise room and then in room 8. The wet room was fantastic - did not want to come out of the shower!! The towels are huge and soft. The food was superb! We asked to be moved from Turquoise room as there was a generator and we could hear the noise from it behind our bed. We was offered room 8 straight away!!

We recently ate at the Kings Arms with friends and found it quite a strange experience. The exterior is country pub/hotel but the interior is London Bistro with prices to match. Our meals were average with the expensive rib eye steaks very gristly and hard to chew, and a chicken kiev complete with slimy skin. The staff either came to us twice in two minutes or not at all for half an hour which made the evening very disjointed. As the bill was £170 with one bottle of wine we expected a bit more from the Kings Arms and would think twice before returning.

Third visit and just as good. Busy early evening which meant that we ate in the small dining room just off the bar, rather than the main dining room, a large room with views over the garden. The staff were the same as at the last two visits and remembered us and looked after us very well.

Prices are similar to other establishments in the area, with mains from the £12 mark up to circa £18/19. The kitchen is open behind a glass facade and you can view the chefs working; always a good sign - even the ice cream is home made on the premises.

The facade is original, behind which the rest of the building has been rebuilt which means it is more contemporary than you would expect from the exterior. We like it a lot, but if you are looking for a traditional Somerset/Dorset establishment you may be surprised.

The situation is excellent, in the middle of the village, with very easy access to Sherborne (4miles), perfect for a weekend break. Also easy access to the A303 from Wincanton which ensures it works well for us to meet friends for Sunday lunch.
