My girlfriend and I had a great experience during a 1.5-day stay at the Fjaerland Fjordstue.
First, this hotel has a very personal touch. The guests received individual attention, and Bård, the proprietor, was a wonderful host. We booked a room just the day before we were planning to arrive. We were taking a night bus to Fjaerland arriving at 6 a.m. When we got to the hotel, Bård was awake and waiting for us at the front desk. That was already above and beyond. We were planning to drop off our bags and kill a few hours before we could check in, but Bård let us have our room immediately! This allowed us to get some much-needed sleep and enjoy our afternoon in Fjaerland.
Then, that night, we got back to the hotel pretty late, well after 10 p.m. and after dinner had already been served. Though they had just finished cleaning the kitchen, my girlfriend and I were quite hungry because we couldn't find any dining alternatives at that hour. They were nice enough to prepare a (very good) dinner for us.
It was very clear that this hotel goes above and beyond for its guests.
Second, the location is amazing. You are literally next to the fjord, and in the center of town. Fjaerland is a truly beautiful place, and neither words nor photos can do it justice. At Fjaerland Fjordstue, you are close to wherever you're hoping to go in the area.
Third, the accommodation is solid. We stayed in a "Category B" room (double room without a view of the fjord), and were quite pleased with it. Yes, it's basic: it's not enormous, there's no TV, there's a small table instead of a desk, etc. Don't expect the Ritz Carlton. The hotel did have all the important elements, though: it was very clean, the beds were extremely comfortable, the shower water pressure was excellent, there was as much hot water as I needed, the sink was modern, etc. Our stay was quite comfortable and restful.
If you're in Fjaerland, you should undoubtedly be spending most of your time outside the hotel. You'd be nuts to remain cooped up indoors all day. But the hotel did have some very nice common rooms that felt like they truly belonged in an old-world villa. The furniture, the decoration, the ambiance were all very warm and comfortable.
Finally, this is not a very cheap stay, but with Norway's distorted prices, almost nothing is. If you're on an extremely tight budget, I suppose pitching a tent at Bøyum Camping is your best bet. But Fjaerland Fjordstue is more affordable than Hotel Mundal, the main alternative, and it's really not that expensive by Norwegian standards. And as I hope this review makes clear, you're renting a very comfortable room and receiving excellent attention.
We recommend this place wholeheartedly.
