Booked this at the very last minute via Cyprus Paradise and would HIGHLY recommend this organisation; clear, concise information, helpful tele-sales staff and the price provided included all "extras" such as baggage and transfers AND there were no credit card charges.
Flew with Onur air, an airline that nobody had ever heard of and got a basic flight, seats a little cramped for a six footer, but nice to have a decent sized snack included, although in flight charges were exorbitant e.g. £8 for a single shot, however you at least have the choice, unlike some of the lower end budget flight services.
Flying to Northern Cyprus has the unusual hitch of having to touchdown for around half an hour before completing the flight, so this was an added delay we could have done without-could almost have got to Cuba in the same time!
Hotel was what it said on the tin; basic but very clean everywhere, although we did see several flies enjoying the food, which was left exposed for long periods of time (here a few covers would make a huge improvement to standards of hygiene) Plenty of choice from a wide range of salads, olives, hummus etc. and the nicest oranges ever, although some of the food was presented cold, which was a disappointment (ever eaten freezing cold chips before?)
Soup provided at every meal, but a poor selection of deserts; not that we eat them anyway, but a little ice cream would have been nice now and then.
Breakfasts mainly vegetarian apart from some "hot dog" type sausages which appeared from time to time; clear favourite was the omelettes made to order.
We were originally placed in a tiny, dark ground-floor room but were moved the next day thanks to the very helpful and wonderfully friendly Bahrie (clearly the best member of staff here) and took a larger room on the first floor. Although this overlooked the road and there was some traffic noise, this was a vast improvement; suspect the pool-view rooms are reserved for repeat visitors. Beds (a double and a single) OK and nice to have a recently re-furbished room, although no access to electrical sockets had we needed them.
Although this holiday was clearly bought as half board (a nice free upgrade form B+B) we were disappointed to have to pay even for coffee during the day; 8TL a time does add up
This Hotel has a number of notices banning the import food and drink from elsewhere and here it was clear that there was an obvious profit-oriented motive behind charging 3TL per litre of bottled water when exactly the same product was available less than 100 yards down the road for a third of the price, bearing in mind the heat, expect to get through at least a couple of bottles each per day.
Similar discrepancies for sandwiches and other snacks, but as for the in-flight charges, you have the choice to pay up or go out; there are several decent bars and restaurants in the vicinity, but be prepared to climb up and down the highest curbs I've ever seen, some up to 2'!
The best part of the Hotel was the private pool and beach which were accessed via a subway, far safer than risking crossing the drag-strip of a main road!
Here there was a lovely infinity pool and a beach, both described as "private" although some locals also seemed to be using these and the beach was a little poor in terms of snorkelling, but nicely clean, although beach shoes highly recommended to move painlessly from the sandy beach across the hidden stones in the sea before you can start swimming.
Usual facilities on the beach i.e. bar and snacks, all at Hotel prices and these can also be charged to the room, so no need to take a large amount of cash.
The downside to this holiday is the lack of entertainment; there was only one evening where a belly dancer arrived for an hour or so, other than this there is one pinball machine, broken for the duration, and a bar football machine. Some quiet muzak in the background, so be prepared to take books, a pack of cards or a few board games. Most people seemed content to sit around and chat over a few drinks.
There's also an indoor pool, with a broken jaccuzi and a gym area with just a few tired-looking machines and some tiny little barbells; gave this a miss and relied on swimming for exercise. Saw massage services available, but did'nt use these as nobody seemed to know what they involved and there was an up-front charge to pay.
On the plus side safe deposit boxes provided free of charge behind the Reception area and free use of internet, either via the one Hotel PC or wirelessly via your own equipment, although a very slow connection in either case. Decent beach/pool towels provided too.
OK for what it is, we will not be returning, but more because of the long flight than the Hotel, however enjoyed it for what it was, a last-minute holiday and we were prepared just to read and swim in the sun for a week.
Try for a pool-view, otherwise suggest second floor better than those at ground level; be prepared f...
