I'm always anxious to have a lovely view while I eat, and many tables in the restaurant have a splendid view of the lake (note in addition to the main restaurant there are several tables right in the shop window overlooking the lake). Outside tables also available with an even better view, sadly when we visited they were far too cold and windy to use.
The food, while rather expensive, was really great for its flavour. Presentation was just a bit too artistic for me, the roast meat was on top of the mashed potatoes making it difficult to cut! Personally I'd rather have roast potatoes anyway, but they weren't an option. The desserts on offer were exceptionally tasty, and imaginative.
We found all the staff friendly and welcoming.
My only complaint, and sadly all too common in British restaurants, is that food was left on open display near the till at the perfect height for children to cough on it. I was particularly surprised to find sausage rolls displayed in this way – I thought they should be refrigerated. Anyway it's easy enough to avoid buying anything that is displayed in this way, and as the place gets 5 stars from the Food Standards I'm sure the kitchen meets the highest standards.
If you are visiting Ellesmere, this really is the best place to eat.
