Had a great couple of hours here. Friendly staff and wonderful cafes near by. Gives you a real taste of life in Northland and the gum diggers.

“If in Northland, you must visit at least once!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

Kauri is shown in all it's possible glory here from the smallest item to the sweeping staircase which goes up the centre of a huge Kauri tree!

“worth the money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

The admission price of $25 seems a bit high at first, but the museum is large and informative and well worth the money. The black and white photos and stories of Kiwi characters (gum diggers and wood choppers) are excellent. Allow at least 2 hours to enjoy this bit of NZ history - shame there is so little forest left now!

“Interesting.”

Interesting, informative and bigger than I thought it would be. Guided tours available if you so wish. Impressive tree cutting machinery! Definitely worth a stop.

“An excellent museum, but an indifferent cafe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

The museum is one of the best local museums in New Zealand. It is worth 3 or 4 hours at least; do as they suggest - go right through to the back and then browse towards the entrance.

Enjoy the first-class interpretation of the locality and its history; appreciate the stories of the many local people who have brought prosperity to the area over the past few centuries. Marvel at the natural wonder that is the Kauri. All of this is a real joy, and a credit to the staff and volunteers who make it all happen.

The museum's cafe over the road - the Gum-Diggers - is the one blot. The place has a strong smell of grease, is sparsely furnished and offers basic fare without distinction. It needs a make-over and better management.

Fortunately, a really good option exists just 50 metres along the road ..... Matakoe House. Lunch there is a very pleasant experience - check it out.
