“Birthday Treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

I treated my mum to a birthday weekend at Yapham Cottages. We arrived to a warm welcome from Martin and home-made scones. We both departed wishing we could have stayed longer! The cottage (Shipload) was spotlessly clean, comfortable and thoughtfully and well equipped. I've rented many cottages, but until now, none have come with a Wi! We found the O.S map provided and other info about the area's beaches especially helpful.
The area is very peaceful and stunning with views over the hills from the cottages which are surrounded by beautifully kept gardens full of birds. We enjoyed watching them feed on the peanut-filled feeders placed thoughtfully just outside the cottage.
Both my mum and I would thoroughly recommend Yapham cottages as a quiet, get away from it all and look forward to visiting again next year.

Dear Tamara, Thank you for writing such a great review. I am so pleased that you found the cottage well equipped, and that you enjoyed using the Wii Fit! So many of our guests enjoy watching the birds feeding, and I am glad that you did too. I do hope that you will be able to visit us again next year. Kind regards, Martin.

We stayed in Barley and our friends in Shipload. The cottages were very well equipped, spotlessly clean and, as soon as we unpacked, felt very comfortable and homely. The welcoming pack included necessities such as enough milk, tea and coffee to keep us going until we got to the local shop AND niceties which we will leave as a surprise for anyone who follows us. Barley's conservatory is a bonus having a lovely outlook and lots of birdlife visiting the feeder, including Woodpecker and Nuthatch, with a tame pheasant wondering round picking up the over-spilled seeds.
There was a large selection of walking books, pamphlets and OS maps to help us explore the area and we enjoyed some of the coastal path walks and a walk out from Hartland during which we were picked up by a beagle which wanted to show us the way back into the village! One nearby walk took us into Clovelly by the Coastal Path thus avoiding the £6.50/ person entry charge if we had visited the village via the car park and visitor centre at the top of the hill.
The Hart in the centre of the village served excellent meals and a good range of beers and Hartland Quay was also good to visit. Luckily for us, and thanks to Martin for letting us know, on the day of our arrival there was a new event in the village, the Sausfest. This was held in the village hall where for a modest entry fee we were able to join the villagers, young and not so, to enjoy sausage and mash (selection from 9 fillings, 3 gravies and 2 mashes!), home made deserts, local beers (at £2/pint) and view an arm wrestling competition which we were too cowardly to sign up for. It may seem a strange event but it was a delight to join in a really nice village activity. (And we won two of the prizes in the raffle!)
A good trip out, particularly for a wet day was to Instow and Appledore. There is a small but nicely laid out nautical museum in Appledore which opens at 2.00 p.m. Well worth a visit, as was Suzie's tea room for lunch. (Located one row back from the quay side on Market Street.)
Our final comment is about Martin, the host at Yapham. He made us feel very welcome right from the first phone call booking our stay with him, the confirming email with links to walks, things to do, shops & suggested lunch stops en route, his "courtesy call" 2 days before we were due to arrive to check whether we needed any further information or assistance and his guided tour of the property when we arrived. He was clearly concerned that the cottages were to our liking and that we got the most out of our visit.
The tests: Would we go back? Yes, without hesitation. Would we recommend it to others? Same answer!

Dear Mike, Thank you for writing such a thorough review. I am pleased that we passed your tests, and that you would like to return, and would recommend us to others. There are lots of events held in the local area that we encourage guests to attend, such as the sausage festival, Farmers’ Markets and Hartland Carnival for example. I do hope that you will return to Yapham again in the future. Kind regards, Martin.

What a welcome! Martin was on hand to see us in, and we were spoiled rotten by the complimentary gifts of a good bottle of wine, a huge box of chocolates and fresh scones with clotted cream and home made jam! The cottage itself was the perfect size, clean, comfortable and very well appointed with everything you could wish for in the kitchen and in the shower room, a great selection of toiletries in a basket. In the freezer there was even a selection of ice-creams and ready meals available for purchase via an honesty box. Even our dogs were spoiled, with complimentary treats, a towel provided for mucky mitts and two bowls provided.
Freddie the pheasant was a welcome visitor! Such attention to detail is greatly appreciated and seldom found.
We used the cottage as a base from which we explored from Porlock in Somerset through various beautiful locations in North Devon, and then into Cornwall including Port Issac, filming location of Doc Martin, and as far as Padstow. All of these destinations were within comfortable range for a day visit, returning to the cottage in plenty of time to drink, cook and eat. (In that order!) We had a wonderful time, the weather was kind and even with our busy days out we still returned home feeling rested, and that we had been on a holiday to remember.
Many thanks Martin. We will return!
Kevin and Rhonda, with Copper and Penny.

Dear Kevin & Rhonda, Thank you for writing such a great review. It really does mean a lot that you found the cottage to be well equipped and comfortable. Yapham does make a great base for exploring Devon and Cornwall, so I do hope that you will find the time to stay with us again and discover even more “little treasures” in the area. Kind regards, Martin.

We spent a very enjoyable week in Windbury Cottage . The cream tea on arrival was a nice touch and much appreciated after a long car journey. The cottage was immaculate and very well equipped. The guides and maps were invaluable and we enjoyed visiting all the beaches suggested on the photo board. I think we managed to see most of them. We spent several relaxing mornings with our cups of coffee watching the birds feeding.Seeing the nuthatch was a real treat and the pheasant was a regular and welcome visitor seeking titbits. Martin was a welcoming host-friendly and accommodating. He even got our car going on our morning of departure when it decided not to start! All in all a lovely retreat with spectacular coastal walks so close at hand. We would have no hesitation in recoommending it to friends.

We stayed at Barley cottage for 2 weeks and had one of the best holidays ever. Martin made us feel so welcome. The area is so beautiful and well kept gardens surround the cottages, attracting many birds and some squirrels. There are so many places to visit within the local area, in a car or walking. We fished a couple of times at the pond, even if your not into fishing it is a lovely place to sit with a picnic (Martin has picnic basket you can use). We may be going back in the future, I hope.

Dear B & M, Thank you for writing a really great review. It was lovely to meet you, and I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us. The nearby fishing pond is great isn’t it? We’ve had a few guests fish down there over the last couple of months. They have all said the fishing is good there. I certainly hope that you will be able to stay with us again in the future. Kind regards, Martin.

We cannot recommend Yapham Cottages highly enough. We were looking for a secluded and peaceful venue for a walking / beach holiday near to the stunning coastline that is the South West Way. We have visited this area about 6 times in recent years always staying at rental holiday lets. Yapham (Barley Cottage) was perfect for us and was the nicest place we've stayed at in the area. Although in a very quiet rural location it is just a few minutes’ drive from Hartland for pubs and provisions. We will definitely revisit next year.

The site is managed by Martin who made us feel very welcome and throughout our stay was always keen to help out in any way he could. The cottage was well equipped and very clean and tidy. The welcome gifts of wine, chocolates and a 'cream tea' was a lovely touch.. as were the fresh flowers. Martin even makes sure that there is a plentiful supply of seed and nuts to keep the birds, ‘tame’ pheasants and squirrels happy.

We cooked and ate in most nights and found the kitchen to be well equipped. Another great idea is the supply of ice-cream and frozen meals - which are there to buy if we had wanted them. The bundle of guide books and good quality maps in the cottage were very useful. There was also a good supply of DVD's and books.

The conservatory was really lovely to have and allowed us to hide from the weather when necessary and watch the birds.

Yapham is an excellent venue for a very relaxing holiday.
