“I adore this old place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

We've been visiting Shenandoah all our lives starting when we were dating in the 70's. Back then we camped in Matthew's Arm with my mom and siblings. We've visited Big Meadows and Skyland with our own kids, and I must say, Skyland is a favorite. Please don't expect state of the art anything. Your room will likely not have a television or a phone. You will not enjoy wifi unless you are sitting in the lounge and your signal will be spotty at best. If you must remain connected you'll need a data plan with a private hot spot.

What you can expect is to dial back the noise and bask in the absolute simplicity of basic accommodations and basic food well done. As a bonus you'll be treated to herds of deer that troop through the resort on a daily basis, and the occasional mother bear with her cubs. Many rooms will feature a view of the valley far, far below. It doesn't matter if you are above the clouds, in the clouds, in bright sun or moonless, star-filled night, every circumstance is beautiful in its own way. Skyland is the perfect home base for enjoying Shenandoah National Forest. Try to get in a horse back ride while you are there. The Delaware North is the new vendor for Skyland and all the accommodations in the park, taking over where Aramark left off. We'll be visiting later this year, and I'll come back and add to this review after that.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a valley view. Save the map of the property you are given when you check in and...

WIth my family growing up in the 60s, on my own, and with my wife of the last twenty five years, I've been to the national park and Skyland (and Big Meadows and Lewis Mountain ...) probably a couple of hundred times. It remains close to our hearts as a cherished place, because of the serenity, the air, the scenery, the walking, the incredible changes in weather when fronts come through.

Our most recent stay at Skyland was mid November 2012, just after the Veterans Day holiday. For the first time we had a pet dog with us. The pet-friendly rooms are in the Canyon lodge building, down the hill from the dining room. Our upper room (room 166) had a great view of the valley, lights twinkling through the dark evening. This room also had a television, with roughly a dozen or so cable stations; it went unused by us. The only difference with the pet-friendly room is that it has synthetic wood flooring rather than carpet (makes great sense). The room, as has always been our experience, was cozy, rustic, with comfortable beds, functional electric heating (it turned quite cold overnight, with strong winds and sleet beating down), and a clean bathroom with lots of hot water. We enjoyed the overnight stay as usual, and our puppy seemed thrilled by the scents outside and the squirrels, chipmunks, deer, etc. She slept happily all through the night.

Our meals in the dining room were satisfying. Pan-seared chicken breast with wild mushroom risotto was particularly good. A surprisingly good selection of wines is available for those who indulge. We had no room for dessert, though from past experience all the sweet selections are quite good. Bring a healthy appetite. The breakfast menu has good variety, from healthy stuff to a Shenandoah version of eggs benedict.

My wife and I will continue to return here, with puppy in tow, for our usual early spring and late fall visits. We've learned that Aramark will no longer have the concession contract with Shenandoah National Park as of 1 January 2013. Let's hope the new concessionaire - Delaware North Companies - will meet the challenge and keep standards high. We wish them well.

Room Tip: Rooms reserved on-line are pot luck; you do not get a choice of building (as far as I know). If you...

We stayed at the Skyland Resort for a couple nights while we were exploring Shenandoah National Park. The location cannot be beat and the price for our room (a cabin) was affordable. Booking a cabin at Skyland was absolutely the way to go for us and we were completely satisfied. We spent long days hiking outdoors and really only came back to our cabin to sleep, wind down and start over the next day. No television, no wifi in the cabin (but it is complimentary in the lodge) and cell service is shoddy at best (but that was fine with us!) - just a warm room with a bed and a bathroom - it was all we needed. If you are looking for more "luxury" this room is probably not for you, but it was perfect for us.
One REALLY IMPORTANT note about the time of day to arrive at Skyland - BE SURE to get to the National Park gates BEFORE 5PM. The park completely locks down at that point and you cannot get in. (Park fee is $15/week)
In addition, if you're PB&J+ travelers like we are, stock up before your arrival. The food at the lodge is just okay and is really your only option for an actual restaurant once you're in the Park. I will say, both my fiance and I are vegetarian and we did have options for food at the lodge (which is a huge plus) but next time we will be bringing a larger cooler.
Ultimately, I give this place a two thumbs up for location and the very friendly/helpful staff. At the end of a long day of hiking and exploring, it was perfect to come "home" to Skyland.

Our room overlooked the valley. We saw deer, bear, and many birds from our window. Fog came in one morning and covered the mountain with a light coating of snow Beautiful. We go into Lurray or front royal to eat. Uncle Bucks for breakfast is a good bet in Lurray(fried green tomatoes). The Apple Tree in Front royal( apple wood smoked BBQ).

Room Tip: The rooms that allow pets all have a great view of the valley. We watched eagles mate while sitting...

I agree with a lot of what the other poster (sgc13) said about their Thanksgiving 2012 trip. We'd been to Shenandoah a number of times, but this was the first time we ever stayed at one of the "resorts" there. It was great to be right off Skyline Drive and jsut a drive or even a walk away from the trails. The food was very good and the Thanksgiving buffet was awesome - I was taken aback at first by the price (which was expensive but not out of line for a Thanksgiving meal out), but it was worth it - and the staff was terrific. Many had worked long days (we saw them at breakfast and then again at dinner, 10 hours later) on the holiday and you would never have known from their sunny attitudes. We plan to be back!

I stayed here over Thanksgiving with my husband and toddler. We had a wonderful time hiking and relaxing. The resort is very family friendly, and the restaurant was very receptive to dining with a toddler. The staff is helpful without being pushy, and the rooms are comfortable. Skyland offers a Thanksgiving buffet which was amazing. Exploring the outdoors with my family was a memorable way to celebrate the holiday. We will absolutely be back!

Dated facility, but exceptionally managed and maintained. Comfortable bed, everything worked. Excellent food at a reasonable price. Entertainment at night by local musicians. Starbucks coffee. But beware, we were told the current management team (ARAMARK) is being replaced next year. We have travelled much of the US and Aramark managed properties always seem to be exceptional. Hopefully, this property will continue to shine with new management.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the Birmingham rooms--others are nice too
