“what a view, pity about the restaurant service.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

Wonderful location, the view from our balcony was somthing to die for with the lights of Luray far down through the trees in the valley below. The early morning call with the orange juice was a great way to start the day,and even the hike up for breakfast was rewarding with deer crossing the trail. The rooms are a little dated but some how added to the charm or the place and the feeling of going back to nature. However the evening meal in the restaurant was very slow and when it did arrive was nearly cold and had to be sent back for warming, such a pity as the entertainment and the overall atmosphere was exellent.

Room Tip: The views from the higher floors are the best as they tend to be above any low growing trees.

We had to wait longer than expected to get into our room. However, the view of the valley from the room was great. The wait staff in the restaurant was exceptionally friendly. We took a couple of short hikes and attended a couple of Ranger Programs. Although a couple of minor things in the room needed attention, it was still very neat and clean.

Room Tip: Second floor room are better, but you need to physically go to the cabins to see which offer the bes...

We stayed here for a long weekend for a wedding at the location. We loved the staff and they were very helpful even when we were running behind. Our room was to be expected for a more rustic destination. We had a great breakfast in the dining hall and all the catered food was really good. Would recommend a trip, but set your expectations appropriately this is a mountain retreat not a downtown boutique hotel. Also recommend getting up really early and driving north on skyland to see the sun come up, it was beautiful!

Room Tip: the cabins are very cute, the rooms by check in have a great view and the rooms across from the banq...

I would have given this place 5 stars. It was convenient to locations on Skyline Drive. They had great Ranger Programs. I liked our room, But I did make reservations back in April or even before that. I requested a room with a view and when we got to our room our view had trees in front of us. It was not that bad of a view. If you leaned over you could see the valley. We were able to see deer. It was easy to walk to the Dining room once you figured it out on your own. The reason why I only gave it 3 stars is because the staff was not very friendly at all. I am sure they are overworked and I hope it is not because they just didn't care. They were not helpful. It took forever to get served our food the first day, because the wait staff did not know who was in charge of our table. I would have gotten up and left, but I was starving and my blood sugar was getting low. When they finally did serve us, we only got apologies not even a free soda for the rudeness. Most of the time, I felt like I was an inconvenience. Not a good feeling on a vacation. Other than that, I liked the place a lot. The rangers were great and I loved the area. Just would like the staff to be friendly and welcoming.

Room Tip: You could try to ask for a good view.

I came here with my boyfriend for a one night get away. The location is perfect and we had a lovely (yet difficult) hike with an amazing view. I was impressed looking at the hiking options that there were multiple hikes that are wheelchair accessible and family friendly. The food in the Dining Room was very good as well, I had the local trout and the "spoon bread" which was almost desert! We had a great time. I see some people commenting on the outdated rooms and simple rooms, yet this was not a problem for us. To me it was perfect. We stayed in a 100 year old cabin and it looked the part. It was very clean and we had hot water, electric and heat. It was a very nice place considering it is on the top of a mountain! We liked the cozy and historic atmosphere. We will be visiting again soon.

Stayed in a king sized blue ridge room. Just out side our window was an amazing view fo the Shenendoah Valley. At night the lights of Luray twinkled below, and more impressively the Milky Way above. The room it self was fine, but in real need of updating. Simple things like a shower curtain that slants out from the tub, a flat screen TV (not all rooms have TV and really when you have the beauty of Shenendoah National Park surrounding you you don't really need one), up dating of the bath room - tile, shower, vanity etc. new furniture in the room...you get the picture. But the bed was comfortable. The restaurant has a limited but very good menu, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with a view.

A real bonus is that Stoney Man trailhead is right at the entrance. There are ranger lead activities also.

So, if you need a couple of days in the mountains...Skyland is a good choice, just don't expect top notch accommodations.

Bottom line...

We stayed in the Winchester lodge which has great views of the valley. Conveniently located in the park. Hiking trails right from Skyland and numerous trails throughout the park. Accommodations are simple, but adequate. Would definitely plan to visit again.

Room Tip: Winchester lodge has great views.
