“Fun Family Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2014

We took our grandson for our annual trip to the Shenandoah National Park and decided to try Big Meadows instead of our usual Skyland. The past several years we have had some problems at Skyland with our reservations and ants in the cabins, lots of ants, not just a few. I found the staff at Big Meadows much more friendly and no problems with my reservations. Our room did have a lot of stairs to access it, so I would recommend asking about this, it was difficult to get the cooler and bike up the steps. The room was cleaner than at Skyland and no bugs or ants. We will stay a Big Meadows again next year when we bring our grandson down for the visit, but will try a different accommodation, maybe a cabin instead of a hotel room.

Summer is truly the best time to visit Shenandoah NP and stay at Big Meadows lodge. The wild flowers are in bloom. The animals including deer and bears are busy in the meadow. And the best reason is that there are virtually no crowds!

Go for the location, views and trails. Rooms are old, but clean and a fun throwback to the past. Dining is pricey but tasty. Visitor center nearby is well done with much social and political history of Shenandoah National Park.

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night on a two-week trip. I now wished we'd stayed elsewhere, maybe the Skyland Resort down the road. I had a reservation but when I tried to check-in I was kept waiting, along with another customer, for 20-30 minutes because their internet was not working. The room had already been charged, but they wanted to add a charge card "just in case." The desk clerk helping me acted like she could go off on a rampage at any moment.

I had reserved a room in the main lodge for an AARP rate of $95.20 (before tax). The room was accessed from the outside front of the lodge. It had a double bed. The bathroom smelled of mold and mildew. I had to return to the front desk to request another room because I am allergic to mold.

The only other option I was given was a "Preferred" room with 2 Queens in a separate building for the AARP rate of $153. That's a huge jump to have a room without mold. We did take this room. It was good sized, and had a fridge. There was no mold or musty smell. However, we did get lots of flying bugs in the room through the openings around the windows and doors. We used pillows to block some of the openings.

The location is very nice; the scenery is beautiful. I have stayed at many rustic lodges throughout the US and Canada, and the rooms at the main lodge were about the worst, particularly for the price. For those with problems walking, be sure to find out where your room is located. Many are not close to the parking area.

The dining room is very overpriced. We had dinner there, and a chicken dinner was $17, the ribs were $23. There was nothing that stood out about the food. It was definitely not worth the cost. We went to the taproom downstairs to have a beer, but we were never waited on. Staff was too busy talking to wait on us.

Room Tip: Check a map to see where your room is located; you may have a long walk. Lodge rooms in the front a...

From upper 80s, we arrived to Big Meadows lodge in late July to 65 degrees. What a relief. We've stayed here several times before. It's not luxurious, but that's kind of the point. The restaurant is good, if somewhat pricey. The pub's musical acts and local beer/wine are great. And, of course, the views and hiking is excellent. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Wifi is only in the lodge.

I often use the Big Meadows Lodge dining area when I'm hiking or camping, so this is a review for that. The food is decent enough, either the cold sandwiches or the hot food, but the real thing to make sure you get is the blackberry ice cream. Just about all of the major food stops on the Skyline Drive have a blackberry something-or-other, and those are the best things in the park to eat.

There's a small grocery store in the back of the dining area that's quite useful if you forgot anything for an overnight trip, but make sure you know what's allowed wherever you're camping.

This is also convenient to the Dark Hollow Falls hiking trail, so if the parking area is full there, park up at Big Meadows and take a quick walk down.

The rooms in the lodge are in great need of being totally refurbished My understanding is that the new concessionaires plan to do this (they have already spruced up Skyland Lodge, also in the Shenandoah National Park). That being said, the view from the terrace outside the room in spectacular. Service at the lodge is very good. And as always, hiking opportunities nearby are excellent. Given the location and price, the lodge is worth a stay, as long as you do not spend much time in your room.

Room Tip: Terrace rooms facing west afford the best views.
