“Away from it all!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

We had read that Big Meadows was rustic but clean and that was exactly what we found. We were happy to get away from TV, phones and internet but if you just want to relax, hang out and enjoy nature this is for you. The food in the lodge was good to excellent depending on the meal. Our terrace room had a great view, sunsets and we even watched the 4th of July fireworks going off in multiple small towns down in the valley.

Room Tip: the terrace rooms 1-6 have the most amazing views and are centrally located! our room was perfect fo...

We were just there for one night and other than the beautiful view from the lodge, a room in the valley would have been just as good and cheaper. Of course we would not have woke up in the mountains.

The room was clean and comfortable. We had a first floor room (#80) and the view of the valley was not visible due to the trees. We had to walk to the lodge to see the view of the valley, which was beautiful.

We did enjoy sitting outside of our room in the evening and checking out all the beautiful stars. We were there July 7th and had to put on our jackets. It was quite cool and windy.

We didn't eat in the lodge, but I did hear that it is good. The Wayside is a nice stop to pick up some snacks and anything you might need for your stay. Their fried chicken is pretty good too!

There were a lot of children. It was great for young families!

Nice gift shops.

While the room's are very old school, they were very clean and cozy. There is no tv, ac or phones in the room, but yoummust realize you are roughing it. With all the beauty and activites you do not need modern distractions. There is free WiFi in the main lodge. the dinning was excellent. We ate in the tap room, the farmers platter offers a fantastic selection of local cheeses ( I highly recommend it) keep an eye out for wild life in th picnic grounds deer, skunks an squirrels are often there. There are rooms under 100 a night, just keep looking online. Great getaway for 2

Feels like summer camp! Truly in need of pain, deep cleaning, and rehab! Our room was ready
THREE HOURS after the stated check in time! Exceptional food on site! Rave reviews! The reason you'd stay here is location , location, location. The main lodge has exquisite views. The CCC camp rooms need a re-do, and re-pricing. This is a new concessionaire, & they should step it UP!

Big Meadows Lodge was a good choice for my park visit.
Actually in the park and close to the ranger station / activities / store / little carry out food joint.
I loved the ambience of my cottage style room complete with fireplace.
The restaurant was elegantly casual with great vistas of the park.
Staff was very attentive, helpful.
One warning - be sure to ask what amenities come with your room.
Some rooms might seem primitive.
And the bar could lower the lights in the evening.
But it was a nice getaway.

We planned to stay at Big Meadows Lodge because we had good memories of other visits. We made the reservation in January for a June stay. We called a few weeks beforehand and confirmed. We arrived at 6:00 p.m. and were told that they did not have a room for us. A little investigation confirmed that when the front desk checked the booking agency (this is the one that you have to use to book online), our reservation was there--however, on their in-house computer, the reservation was not. We did hear the remark that this had happened before and wondered why the problem had not been fixed. As there were no rooms remaining, they booked one of the last remaining rooms at Skyline for us and took care of the room charge since the mistake was there's (this is earning the two stars instead of one). If there had not been a room there, it would have been a long trip back down the mountain to search for lodging.

We stayed in a room in one of the buildings separate from the lodge. They were basically wood panelled boxes. I found used dental floss on the bathroom floor and money not far under the bed. After lying down on the bed, I was covered in some kind of white animal fur, dog?! They changed our bedding, but obviously someone's pet had slept on the bed and housekeeping had not changed it, or barely cleaned the room for that matter. Nasty. No air conditioning and I would recommend bringing a fan in the summer, it must get warm.
The lodge had above average food but it is pricey. There are not a lot of options in the park, so you're stuck. There was live music each night in the basement bar and also a tv room if you need it. Wifi is only available in the largish common room of the lodge and there is no business center.
There is a brochure that asks that people keep quiet between 10pm and 7am and it worked. The place was practically silent all night.

The location is stunning, however. The views from the back of the lodge are gorgeous and the rangers in the visitor's center were friendly and knowledgeable. There is not a lot to do here other than hike and rest and relax. The park is on Skyline drive which is legendary for it's beauty. I would love to see it in the fall, but would hate the crowds. The early June travelers were less in number and did not include many school age kids who would probably bring the noise level up.

Room Tip: I would try to get a lodge room if I returned or I might try Skyland as it's a little bit smalle...
