“Montecito Sequoia Lodge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2014

We just returned from a National Park vacation. We spent one night at the Montecito in order to see Sequoia National Park. Most of our lodging was top shelf and very expensive by choice (Old Faithful Inn, Awahnee, etc) - but that night we need a quick place for one night. Very, very, pleasantly surprised with the Montecito. First of all the rate was so reasonable for what we got. It was about $140. for the evening and breakfast and dinner were included (a real deal). It was buffet style with tons of choices and very descent quality. They even offered to put a plate aside if we got back late from our hike. They had a pool, game room, trampoline for kids, costume house for kids to place and pretend, a beautiful lake with boats, etc. - marshmallow roast after dinner. It's set in the woods, quiet and serene. It's a very special place. The only reason that I didn't give it an 'excellent' was that our room was a 'closet' - very plain.

We were here because we were visiting Kings Canyon & Sequoia National Parks. We chose it for its location, price, & other Tripadvisor reviews. What a wonderful lodge! What a surprise to find that the food was 5 star! Fresh, varied, buffet, & with vegetarian options. We locked ourselves out of our car, & the office staff got one of their employees to help us unlock it, even in the bad weather that day. There was an evening activity the day after we arrived talking about the geology of the parks. Piano music in one of the rooms. 2 fireplaces to relax in the evenings by, & it was cool. The room we got was a corner room with lots of windows. Private bath with lots of hot water. Very nice lodge!

Let me start off by saying if you're expecting Ritz-Carlton accommodations, you're in the wrong place, just keep on drivin'. This lodge is set deep in the heart of beautiful national park lands and is a wonderful chance to enjoy nature and a simple, rustic setting.

The breakfast-lunch-dinner menus are well diversified, and changed every day, and the buffet-style meals are hearty with plenty of healthful selections. Travelers that arrive late are offered what hasn't been consumed after the dinner period. Next day take-out lunches are provided upon written request for those that will be out and about during the noontime meal. We saw several late arrivals whipping themselves up something to eat, even though the scheduled dinner period was long since over. This is a bit like mom's kitchen. Each day during mealtime we struck up converations with total strangers, without everyone sitting around with electronic devices stuck to them.

This rooms are basic - no TV, radio, refrigerators, microwaves, or frilly amenities. This is great chance to get close to nature and leave the rat race behind. Our three nights here were delightful. Our room was clean and bright, the bed was very comfortable, with ample supplies in the bathroom. The grounds are lovely to explore, and everyone seemed to be having a nice time. There is usually an evening activity in the main lodge, with a naturalist or other such leader giving a talk, or maybe just a simple bingo game. (One particular evening, Gil from Georgia, a guest, commandeered the piano and entertained us all evening long, in front of a cozy crackling fire - super!)

Wireless and cell service was sketchy and intermittent, after all you're in the middle of nowhere, but it won't kill anyone to be without it for a while. This is a chance to enjoy Mother Nature's work at it's best, and actually meet new people without distractions.

The staff was courteous and helpful whenever we needed assistance. Be sure to meet Nick - a real super guy.

Considering the daily rate includes three squares a day, we found this lodge to be a super bargain. I feel we were indeed fortunate to have stayed such a nice place, at a hard to beat price. This was probably our one and only opportunity to visit the Monticeto Sequoia Lodge, and I'm sure glad we did.

We spent a night at Montecito Lodge with a two year old and sorely regretted not having planned to spend longer. The staff were friendly and there were a number of activities for the kids... a play area, trampoline, fishing, an archery range, a campfire and smores! I had a good time canoeing around the beautiful lake myself.

The room was small with no TV... but we didn't mind that since the idea was to spend as much time as possible outdoors. The food was good and vegetarian friendly.

Overall, this is a good place and I highly recommend to check it out.

Pros: location, location, location. Within Sequoia national park, very close to Kings Canyon and on a beautiful lake. You will be very close to many great hikes in the area (5 - 50 minutes drive). Moreover, the team and service are great and friendly. Price include 3 meals / day + an option to get a packed lunch on the trails. It is not a 5 stars restaurant, but it is way more than adequate and unless you have unrealistic expectations you are likely to be satisfied. The room was clean and comfortable.

Cons: mid week price was reasonable. weekend / holiday price is way too high. Also, for some reason, lunch, or packed lunch, is not included in the last day of stay which is disappointing.

We didn't have a very good experience at this hotel. We went there last week (23rd May 2014) We reached there at 7.30 pm and they said the dinner time is over at 7pm and we could only get left overs.... Who ends the dinner at 7 pm in a national park where there aren't any restaurants nearby ?? Also its summer and people are out hiking and more likely to arrive later than usual... so that wasn't a good start...

Next morning, we saw packed tail pack lunches for guests... when we asked about it front desk said we have to order it the night before and ofcourse nobody told us about it so we didn't get that also...

Now about the room: The room was good , spacious... the location of this hotel is the real deal... it is right in the center of the national parks...

WIFI Doesn't work in the room even though they claim so...

The one other thing about staying there was we got a good deal at 129$ for a night... but with the lack of good service it seemed high...

Room Tip: Dinner time is tlil 7 pm only so show up before that if you want to have dinner there... WIFI doe...

we spent 2 nights at MSL and just loved it...the staff is very nice...the food was great at each meal(all meals were included)...things were done on time...actually, the meals typically began 20-30 minutes prior to the posted time.

meals are served buffet style with a typical breakfast of eggs, meat, pancakes, potatoes, etc., plus a pastry and selection of coffees, teas, waters and juices...especially appreciated were the lunches prepared for us to take out during our trips to the Parks...plenty of food with a big sandwich, juice, granola bar, chips, and apple

i would love to go back here again!

Room Tip: get a room in the main lodge...we had one in another building and being in the main lodge is definit...
