“Great Family Camp”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2011

We just returned from a 4th year of family camp. As always, we had a wonderful time. The draw here is the wonderful staff, many of whom return year after year, and who make the place home. The activities are great (waterskiing, horse back riding, archery, riflery, yoga, aerobics, swimming, paint ball, organized and unorganized hiking, mountain biking, water color painting, tie dying, etc.) and we don't see our kids for hours on end - if they didn't have to come home to the room to sleep, we might not see them at all. The scenery, of course, is sierra mountain magic (great wildflowers this year, by the way). The food is much better than we have a right to expect it to be and the beds much more comfortable. After all, it's summer camp, folks (complete with some of the silliest campfire songs ever imagined)!!
Yes, the carpets are in real need of cleaning (mugsy, please get someone in soon to do it), but they see a LOT of traffic. And yes, the water pressure is from gravity fed tanks and unreliable. We try to take our showers at non-peak times to get the best pressure.
And yes, you do have to bus your own dishes - there is no wait staff. No phone except one common one off the lobby (and you ARE blessedly out of cell phone range unless you hike up to the top of big baldy peak nearby) , but internet access is available (free) via satellite. If the above will just ruin your day, you shouldn't come. If the above are mere trifles, go on up and have the best family week ever!

Dear bearwald,
Thanks so much for returning to Montecito for family camp! We really appreciate your feedback and we love our return camp families! Just wanted to let you know that due to the late snow this spring, we did not get our dust control brine down in camp until late this year, and then we had some unexpected rain showers come through while camp was full. The result; an awful muddy mess tracked in and on to all of our carpets and floors (even our brand new carpeting in the lodge hallways). We've had the carpet cleaner staying here the past few weeks cleaning the carpets in both the public areas at night, and in the individual rooms during the day. Fortunately, there was no permanent damage and we are looking so much better now. We look forward to seeing you again next year for a great week of camp! Thanks again for your comments and know that we are also trying to improve our facilities! Sincerely, TS Dally

Cannot speak highly enough of Montecito Sequoia Lodge. We were so pleased we booked this accommodation which is inside the park as it's a long drive in and out. We had a beautiful corner room looking out over snow-capped mountains. It was spacious and clean. The big surprise was the 3 meals a day all included in the price. We'd like to make special mention of the chefs who excelled on all 4 days of our stay by producing a different selection of dishes at every meal, plus....if we were unable to eat in for lunch, an enormous packed lunch was supplied. We stayed in May, so just after the ski season and before the school camps, so the place was fairly quiet. However we loved the communal eating and enjoyed meating people and chatting around the tables and around the huge log fire. The staff were constantly on the go but always pleasant and friendly. This is a brilliant place to stay to explore both Sequoia and Kings Canyon. This was our first trip to California from Australia and we were blown away by the spectacular scenery. Visit General Sherman Tree, Mono Rock, and walk the Kings Canyone river loop walk. Lots to do and see.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room with mountain views.

In a nutshell, this is a school camp - the main lodge has slightly tired accommodation in an unflattering colour scheme, but you get a good sized room with queen bed, and a bathroom with a shower and bathtub.

The best thing about this place is that it's chilled out, there are activities for children and adults, and all meals are included. The food was variable - pretty mediocre on the first night, but very good on the second and third night that we stayed.

Its much better value off-peak - it was $169 on Saturday night and $109 on Sunday and Monday night. Almost everybody here has young children - this is not really the place for a romantic getaway.

The main rooms include comfy sofas, fires, table tennis tables, table football and play-mats for young children with lego and other toys. There is free wifi throughout the lodge.

The worst thing was that the common areas were a bit dirty - the floor in the main room looked as if it could do with a good mopping - nevertheless we enjoyed our stay - extended it by a night and would recommend it to others with children.

Stayed here with a friend recently. We came mainly for the cross-country skiing which was excellent. Well groomed and maintained trails with excellent snow conditions. We skiied both days and loved it. The food was abundant and good with a plenty options. Staff was friendly and helpful. Don't come here unless you like kids. It's definitely geared towards families. They have lots of winter activities and classes for all levels. The only drawback was the room was subpar. The sheets were clean and the bed comfortable but the room could have used a good scrubbing. The water pressure was super low in the shower and bathroom faucet. Since we were there for only one night, it was manageable. This is not meant to be a fancy resort style but I would have preferred a cleaner room. Don't come here if you are looking for a quiet place to relax as the kids are all over the place. They seemed to be having a ball. Again, this is a great unpretentious place to bring your kids. They will get to experience fun and recreation like the generation before them grew up with. They offered a yoga class on Sunday morning which was taught by a visiting instructor from the coast. The class was excellent and a great complement to our ski activities. Will definitely come back here to ski. Not sure about staying overnight.

This has turned into a family winter tradition! This is one of our most favorite vacations every year...the rooms are spacious and CLEAN...the food is gourmet!...the scenery....well if you have to ask, you won't understand...a little pricey before Christmas, but after the new year, prices drop dramatically...We do miss the old owners, as they were so nice, you felt like they were family...they new owners are great and helpful too!...last year we got in late due to a blizzard and being escorted in...The owner made sure they left the dinner food out so we could all get a hot meal (delicious by the way)...did I mention the 24 hour pantry?...hot chocolate, sandwiches, deserts, all available 24 hours...WE LOVE IT!

We really enjoyed our stay at Montecito Sequoia Lodge! Wonderful place with lots of activities that are included in the price of your room. My husband and I were able to get in on the last 30 minutes of shooting at the rifle range and the staff person was very pleasant and patient. The room was small but clean. Our bathroom was big and very clean with new fixtures and I have included pictures. A buffet breakfast and buffet dinner are also included in the price and the food was very good. We really enjoyed the big fireplace in the lodge and also enjoyed the campfire in the evening where they provided the supplies to make smores. Only wish we would have had more time to enjoy the activities offered here. With everything that is included it is definitely worth the price and we will stay here again if we return to the area.

My husband and I decided to have our 5 yr anniversay here at the lodge.
After looking at the website I was surprised to see how BAD the rooms were. We stayed in the room right next to the stairs. We walked into the room thinking it would be spacious (as indicated on thier website), were we shocked. the bathroom was EXYTREMLY small and portions of the ceiling were painted and the vent from the bathroom was not cut completely to the size of the vent which left gaps around it. The lining to the shower curtain was filthy and the toilet did not work when we went into the room. We took pictures of these different things that we felt needed some sort of attention. The website or pamphlet says it was renovated a few yrs ago. The only thing I thought they did was put tile and a newer sink in the bathoom.
If you are a light sleeper do not get a room near the stairs. You can hear everyone go up and down the stairs. At times you can hear peoples conversations in the hall. This room has been one of the worst rooms we stayed in.
We got in on Saturday thinking that there would be either cell phone service, wifi, tv or some other indoor actibities going on(because it was raining all outdoor activities were cancelled), maybe even board games available...nothing. They had a ping pong table with old paddles and just not kept up. If you are going to go to the lodge to just crash and dont care about the upkeep of the room then this may be the place for you. Just make sure it is not raining so the activities are available.

I do have to admit the cozy fire in the dining area was wonderful. I was happy I brought my book to read. Dinner was pretty good. We had choices of salad, salmon, crab cakes, rice, green beans, bread and apple pie. Drinks (non alcoholic) and cereal were included in our rate.
Breakfast was also good. The staff was friendly and that made up for the poor room. We made the best of what we were given.

I would go to this hotel again, only if it were a place we needed to stay to crash for the night. If you request a specific room they will charge you additional money.

I would recommend going on the off season since it is the cheapest and the food and staff were great. Other then that, we will try a different lodge/hotel next time.
