We stayed a few days over new years, and as we were mislead by the website which states that the lodgepole market not too far away was open during winter (I guess it's just a mixup, but though I informed the staff of the lodge, it has not been changed) and thought we could shop for groceries and cheap meals there, we were more or less stuck with having to eat there a few times. In total, we had one lunch and two dinners there, one dinner on new years eve.
The food is ok, with some highlights and also some total let downs, the dining room itself is gorgeous, but the service is incredibly bad. The lunch on new years eve was good, we were one of two parties, and service as well as food during that meal was good. The NYE dinner was crowded, and it seemed that they had way to few staff for this crowd. The starters came over a course of 20 minutes, and surprisingly the first one that came (pasta) was almost cold. The entrees were ok, the vension I had was well cooked, but the market vegetables were just a bunch of green beans, and nothing else came with the dish, which made the presentation a bit lackluster. It was painful to get drinks, or have the water refilled, the average time between ordering and receiving a drink was something like ten minutes. What was really off putting on new years eve was the "dance" afterwards, which looked like it was more of a concession to the staff, cheesy and loud dance music was playing, and the staff crowded the bar (bringing their own drinks...) which made getting drinks even more of an ordeal. Not what you'd expect in a place like this. We chose to just grab a bottle of champagne and left.
On new years day, due to a lack of alternatives, we had dinner again, and this time it took 30 minutes to be seated, even though we reserved a table in advance. The hostess assured us that we would be seated "in a couple of minutes", and got snippy when we asked how our table was coming. Again, food was ok, and service was even worse than on new years eve.
The whole time the staff clearly showed that they resented being stuck at such a remote location on new years eve.
It is a real pity, the dining room is just great, with a huge fireplace and views of the woods, and I like the approach of a somewhat upscale restaurant, but it just does not deliver. Make it less upscale, get better (and more) staff, and this might be a great place to dine, but as it is, it is just not bad enough to make you drive an hour to the next place, which what I think keeps this place in business. The price though are ok for such a remote location.
