We enjoyed our stay in one of the patio rooms on the ground floor. The room was pretty nice, with a little kitchenette and a very large bathroom. The patio is nice with a large picknick table in the front. A downside was the room didn't have any windows except for a window in the door with window shutters. A big downside: all of a sudden the heating set off and we had a hard time shutting it off again because the operating system was hard to comprehend. It was after 8 PM so we couldn't get any help.
Kings canyon is amazing and the ride to the lodge is very scenic. Unfortunately we realised at about 5 PM that the reception was located in the store (so it said in the email we got) and that the store closed at 8 PM (so it said in the travelguide we had with us) so we were left wondering if check-in before 8 PM was required. We rushed to the lodge making sure we were there before 8 PM, not seeing everything we wanted to see while driving. Afterwards I saw envelopes hanging on the door of the closed store so maybe you could still get in after 8 but who knows...
We didn't get a warm welcome. There was a sign at the small reception desk saying 'no vacany' and the person that came to greet us looked at us with a face like 'can't you see there is no vacancy, get out' and it didn't get better afterwards.
People working in the store weren't superfriendly either but the store was quite convenient to get what you needed.
All in all, the location was so nice that our overall experience was very good.
I would recommend this lodge if you are staying more than one night.
