“Location excellent, lodge needs a makeover”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

The Cedar Grove Lodge is in a beautiful location, it can't be beat with the river rushing by, and it's because of this that it gets the rating it does. The room itself was rather clean, beds were okay, however the outside areas, in particular the walkway ramp to second floor needed some attention with quite a pile of mouse droppings alongside the building...signs that make you wonder! Decor appeared to date back to the 70's, so the place is overdue for some reinvestment for an update! The walls are very thin and you can hear activity and children running around from the hallway. Also know that the people next door to you will hear you and what you are doing! We did not enjoy hearing the small children next door, nor the parents later after children were sleeping (sorry, TMI!).
The food at the snack bar was pretty good overall, we ate there often given there is nothing else near by. Staying at the 'lodge' is very convenient for exploring Kings Canyon and I think this is why it gets the business it does. We did do laundry at the facilities during our stay. The staff rules it with an iron fist. You must buy tokens from the store to utilize the washers and dryers and the hours are limited, I believe 7am to 7pm. Now, after a day of hiking and once it is dark, I think that would be the time to waste doing laundry, eh? No,not at Cedar Lodge - they won't even sell you the tokens if it is 6:30pm and not enough time left! I think that is a bit ridiculous. The washers and dryers were clean.
Some of the staff were friendly, others not so much. The store is well stocked having a little bit of everything - I think we restocked on beer and bread, and bought a few souvenirs.
We did get to see one of the patio rooms, small but nice with the river right out front. However because of the location, there is a lot of foot traffic with other visitors milling around to enjoy the area.

“Very adequate accommodations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

Rooms have 2 queen beds, A/C and private shower. Nice towels for a lodge. The snack bar had more than just hamburgers and hot dogs. Breakfast very nice with all basics. Lunch not served when we were there. Dinner between 5-7 pm (get there before 6:15) was an adequate choice of grilled chicken breast, trout or pork chop with starch (rice, baked potato, fries), daily vegetable, salad or soup for $16--and not bad! Wish they would extend their hours from 7am-8pm so you have an adequate amount of time for hiking, etc. The King River flows in front and is a spectacular serenade to put you asleep. The gift shop also has an adequate market and offers bags of ice as well as cubes. Down side was the bridge was out.

“It doesn't look like much, but it's better than you'd expect...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2012

When you drive up, you see it's just a small building...store and snack bar/grille on the first floor, and rooms on the second floor. But the rooms were clean and the beds comfortable, and there is a terrace that overlooks the Kings River as it rushes by. The "restaurant", which is really just a snack bar/grille was actually pretty good. They have a Campfire Program each evening over at one of the campgrounds, which was fun, although you have to get there on your own....no shuttle of any kind here. The park is beautiful!

“Great trip to Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

I made my reservation for Thursday night on Monday night over the internet. The price was right. Check in is 4pm which worked perfectly for me. I arrived about 10:00am and went for a bike ride up to Grants Grove Village and back in the 90F heat. Got back at 4:30, check-in was easy and fast. The desk personnel are helpful and nice. The 'Cedar Grove Village' consists of this single 2 story building. Ground floor had the store and front desk on the front, the snack bar and deck on the back. 18 rooms on the top floor with a nice deck overlooking the Kings River. The room was fine. The beds very comfortable. The air conditioning was very much appreciated.

The patio rooms were under the ground floor.

The snack bar was better than I expected, and I took Dinner, Breakfast, and Lunch there. Dinner was fried trout with baked potato, grilled vegetables, and I got cream of asparagus soup, which after my ride was very welcom.

The clerk in the store was very helpful, and I discovered that for $1.43 out the door, you can buy a premium ice cold beer. General Sherman IPA was a local brew, that I selected from the many choices.

I woke up rested an refreshed at 7:20 am and had a nice breakfast with 2 eggs, sausage and cottage fries. very tasty. Checked out and drove to Roads End by 9:30 for a nice hike to Mist Falls. Saw 3 cubs and caught a glimpse of Mama bear on the trail as shed was shredding a log.
Had the trail pretty much to myself.

Lots more people as I came back. Got back to the car at 1pm and drove to Cedar Grove for a nice lunch.

Room Tip: If it is summertime, go for the regular rooms with AC.

“Fabulous location, inept management”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012

The room was okay, not terrific. We got a patio room. Patio was terrific!

The company's policies are onerous and irrational, mostly in regards to the laundry facility which closes at 7pm. Employees are semi- interested in providing service. Stuff doesn't work. The ATM was broken during our entire three-day stay. Land-line phones were down. Internet didn't work. We could not get a receipt when we checked out.

The place is perfectly situated, but the management is clueless of how to run it. The same company runs the Grant Grove Lodge. For more details on inept management, see my comments on Grant Grove.

Room Tip: Get a room with a patio
