“Great trip to Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

I made my reservation for Thursday night on Monday night over the internet. The price was right. Check in is 4pm which worked perfectly for me. I arrived about 10:00am and went for a bike ride up to Grants Grove Village and back in the 90F heat. Got back at 4:30, check-in was easy and fast. The desk personnel are helpful and nice. The 'Cedar Grove Village' consists of this single 2 story building. Ground floor had the store and front desk on the front, the snack bar and deck on the back. 18 rooms on the top floor with a nice deck overlooking the Kings River. The room was fine. The beds very comfortable. The air conditioning was very much appreciated.

The patio rooms were under the ground floor.

The snack bar was better than I expected, and I took Dinner, Breakfast, and Lunch there. Dinner was fried trout with baked potato, grilled vegetables, and I got cream of asparagus soup, which after my ride was very welcom.

The clerk in the store was very helpful, and I discovered that for $1.43 out the door, you can buy a premium ice cold beer. General Sherman IPA was a local brew, that I selected from the many choices.

I woke up rested an refreshed at 7:20 am and had a nice breakfast with 2 eggs, sausage and cottage fries. very tasty. Checked out and drove to Roads End by 9:30 for a nice hike to Mist Falls. Saw 3 cubs and caught a glimpse of Mama bear on the trail as shed was shredding a log.
Had the trail pretty much to myself.

Lots more people as I came back. Got back to the car at 1pm and drove to Cedar Grove for a nice lunch.

Room Tip: If it is summertime, go for the regular rooms with AC.

“Fabulous location, inept management”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012

The room was okay, not terrific. We got a patio room. Patio was terrific!

The company's policies are onerous and irrational, mostly in regards to the laundry facility which closes at 7pm. Employees are semi- interested in providing service. Stuff doesn't work. The ATM was broken during our entire three-day stay. Land-line phones were down. Internet didn't work. We could not get a receipt when we checked out.

The place is perfectly situated, but the management is clueless of how to run it. The same company runs the Grant Grove Lodge. For more details on inept management, see my comments on Grant Grove.

Room Tip: Get a room with a patio

“Not a hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2012

This is really just a set of rooms attached to a gift shop, small store and very basic cafe. Our room had everything we needed, but was very noisy from the cafe air conditioning. Lovely setting right by the river.

“All about the location. Basic but clean. Friendly Staff.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

Lodge is old and fairly basic, but clean, and let's face it, you are not staying here for luxury accommodations. You are next to a beautiful river in the base of a stunning canyon, and you can get up, have a tasty freshly cooked breakfast from the cafeteria in the lodge, and get out to the trails before anyone else has arrived. We walked Zumwalt Meadow (1.5 mile loop) and took a short walk off the road to Roaring River Falls without seeing a soul, on the 3rd July!!! The drive down into the canyon (and out, as this is the only road) is stunning. Take advantage of just being in this place ... it is well worth it! There is WiFi in the lodge, for those that just have to connect, but it is painfully slow, and appeared to switch off at 9pm. Dinner choices are limited to the small market and the cafeteria. We ate in the cafeteria. The food is freshly prepared, was tasty, with good portions, and served on eco-friendly paper plates. Again, this is not luxury, but the location in this valley is amazing.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms do have air conditioning. Noisy, but it works!

“Mediocre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2012

I haven't stayed at the other hotels in the Sequioa or Kings Canyon National Park so I can't compare them to this one but this is pretty much a basic essentials property. The bbqs they speak of consists of 1 broken bbq (not useable) and one very used bbq. Basically they dont want you barbequing as they want you to buy from the grill (which is 10-20 pp plus beverage) and with 9 people that can add up! In the on site strore a very small container of mayo is 5.19!! No TV and no cell phone reception which isnt the end of the world but you better be prepared if you want to entertain kids. Most people stay on the 2nd floor and there is no elevator so you must carry everything up a flight of stairs. The property itself was pleasant, with a big porch on the upper level with tables and chairs. The area was clean and the river is right there by the bbqs (bring bug repellent!) and it was beautiful. A short walk down the way the fish were actually jumping out of the water.
