We have always wanted to see the big red woods. We drove the 11 hours from Zion National Park to see them and we were not disappointed. If you only make one trip out West you should drive to CA and see the Giant Forest. Of course the main tree is General Sherman but the forest is FULL of Giant Trees! We rode the shuttle bus because a lot of places ONLY the bus fits through the road and a car or cars have to back up for the bus. We had a mini-van with a turtle top so the park headquarters discouraged us from taking our van on the road. We wanted to drive though the "fallen tree". We took the bus and when we got to the tree we were disappointed because we are SURE we could have fit through the tree even with our turtle top. However; we watched as other cars drove through it and took pictures. Our guide was nice enough to let my husband out to take pictures and then get back in. There is a "drive around" place though around Tunnel Log, so even if our van wouldn't have fit we could have taken the same route the bus did. Taking your own vehicle could be a pain though having to back up sometimes. I would probably take my own though. The bus drivers do not give any commentary on the way so it is not like a tour bus, just a free shuttle. We climbed up MORO ROCK. It is a STEEP 1/4 of a mile that feels like a mile to your legs but it is worth it! It is a staircase but the stairs are "carved" into the granite rock itself so it is NOT a leisurely stair climbing experience. In fact the altitude makes it difficult to breath at times. BUT WORTH IT!
