This is my second time coming back to Saguaro West. I came because I just love the Saguaro. They are so unique and I just love the different shapes they all are. I came to do some hiking and planned on doing the King's Canyon Trail to Wasson Peak which is a difficult trail. Unfortunately, I felt the trails were not as well marked as I was lead to believe and myself and another family followed a wash straight into a box canyon. We turned around and came out and then found our mistake. The sign at the picnic area is positioned incorrectly. I then proceeded to start up the mountain with an extra hour under my belt. The desert scenery was beautiful and a few wildflowers were popping out but early March was too soon for most. I was disappointed. Back to the hike. The climb is fine util the switchbacks, which seem to go on and on. Hiking solo, I take some extra precautions and always make sure I am never the last person down a mountain. As I approached the first false summit I realized no one had passed me for a while and if I continued I might just be the last person down. At that point I turned around and started down. That extra hour of being lost hurt. I was disappointed but it was a good decision. Before you think I am making excuses, I did climb Bear Mt in Sedona which had the same elevation change. So my advice is make sure you know the right trail and realize it is a difficult climb. PS I did not go to the Desert Museum this time but it is a MUST DO if you only have time for one thing in Tuscon.
