The only reason I didn't rate this as "excellent" is from a privacy standpoint; it could be much better. Our family usually prefers a very wooded site that provides privacy (like Scenic Beach State Park in Seabeck, WA). However, we LOVE this campground. The pros far outweigh the cons for us. We're a family of 5 with kids ages ranging from 7 to 13. We camp here at least once if not twice a year - every year - and it's usually our first camping excursion of the season.
We bring the kids' bikes. This place is excellent for them to zoom around. It has some great hikes and boasts both river access (Dosewallips River) and a lot of beach front on Hood Canal. It's easy to get to and easy to get in and out. We like to clam and oyster. This place is the best for butter clams, cockle clams and pacific oysters. They say there's Goeduck as well, but we haven't tried for it. At low tide, it's fun to wade into Hood Canal and find sand dollars, starfish, jelly fish, and beach crabs. We usually see bald eagle as well, which is a thrill.
Close by is Pleasant Harbor, where you can rent kayaks. I highly recommend this. Pleasant Harbor and vicinity is beautiful. You can even paddle down to Dosewallips estuary and see the eagles, osprey, and harbor seals.
The area in between Brinnon (where Dosewallips is) and Quilcene is gorgeous. It's a national forest with little side trips you can take into the forest. There's also a salmon hatchery along the route you can check out.
