Pay close attention to the negative reviews. They are all of a piece: Overpriced, cramped, dirty, and in a general state of decay.
The cabin we stayed in was old and funky. The doors wouldn't close and windows wouldn't open. That's not a problem for us. We enjoy the rustic. But what we had was a shack. The bed was miserable. (I've seen better in the dump.) The floors were so dirty that we kept our shoes on when inside. There was no decoration at all: no pictures, no kitsch, no calendars, not even a Good Housekeeping magazine. The overhead lights were 25 watt. Just a miserable place.
But even that's not so bad compared to the crowding. The cabins are cheek-to-jowl and the layout has guests constantly walking through each other's sites. The camping sites have as much charm as a Wal Mart parking lot (and about as much room.) To be fair, it must be said that the campers seemed to be enjoying themselves. Maybe it was the alcohol. It must also be said that despite the crowds, it was generally quite after 10:00. If the guests got a little rowdy, however, I doubt that management could control or contain it. (More below.)
The grounds have an air of decay and dereliction. The cabins have been recently painted, and they look great, but everything else is faded and in disrepair. The rental boats are patched and worn, and they don’t even have sufficient life jackets to fit an average sized kid. (One of the boats we rented couldn’t be rowed because the oarlock was breaking away from the shear. It was just worn out.) It is telling that when the rental house is closed they put up an old worn sign that reads, “back in ten minutes.”
The restaurant is about what you would expect. It wasn't that the food was so bad (it was) or expensive (ditto) but that it was so utterly hopeless. No one cared. My daughter and her husband, who were treating us to our one big dinner out, ordered the seafood platter, which contained a host of clam shells in sauce. My steak, which I hoped even they wouldn't screw up, was coated in a reconstituted dry gravy mix that had been mixed at an incorrect ratio. Everyone pretended to enjoy themselves, but it was miserable. This is not to take anything away from the few staff I saw on the premises. The waitress was doing her best.
Which brings us to the management. The Log Cabin Resort is up for sale, and its owner / manager has the indifference of a state licensing agent. That's what really stings. The place is a hopeless mess, it costs a fortune, and she can't even smile when she takes your money. We were told that four of their cleaning staff walked off the job while we were there. I can guess why. (At length we emptied all our garbage in a 55 gallon garbage bag which we later carried off to their dumpster.)
The National Parks should close the place. It's a shameful reflection on them and on us all.
