“WE GOT BUMPED!”

Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort

Jul 20, 2008

We made a reservation at sol duc 10 months in advancedfor one night while visiting family in WA. When we got there to check in they told us they were overbooked (eventhough we showed up with email confirmation that they had sent, in hand!) They put us up at nearby Elwah B&B which was great (see our review). They also allowed us to use the pools and springs for the day. They were very crowded, as was the parking lot and the lodging area. It felt more like an amusement park than a vacation resort, especially when the bus showed up! The staff was helpful and courteous, although they never let us know in advance of the problem with overbooking. I suspect we got squeezed out in favor of someone having a longer stay at Sol Duc. As a result, our time in the Olympic National Park was minimized. I would be careful about staying here again. Call a day or two before you arrive!

My friend and I were on a girl's getaway weekend when we decided to stay here. I think the "resort" in the name was misleading because it was much more rustic than "resort" implies. We arrived late on a Monday and were lucky to get the last cabin available. It was clean, cozy and had a great porch with a bench. Very nice decorations that hit the perfect balance between country and luxurious. The king size bed had plenty of pillows and warm blankets. We very much appreciated that there was no TV, or cell phone service for that matter, to distract from the glorious surroundings. After a long soak in the hot springs pools, we changed and headed down to the lodge for dinner. The restaurant exceeded all my expectations. The menu was well planned and the wine list more than satisfactory. Our food was delicious and the service was warm. We toddled off to bed with full bellies and slept like babies. I am looking forward to bringing my husband back for a longer visit.

We spent a week touring the Olympic Peninsula and spent two nights at Sol Duc. Our expectations were pretty low based on other reviews however our stay was great. Our kids loved the cabin and continue to talk about Sol Duc being one of the highlights. Accommodations were comfortable and clean. Bathroom was in very good shape - must have been renovated in the past year or two. Our only complaint for our stay was there is only one person handling check ins, gift shop and the general store. Although this food/snack store is the only one around for miles, prices were VERY reasonable - same as we found in Port Angeles. A bottle of premium beer was less than $2!! Food in the restaurant was average so plan on bringing your own for lunch and dinner. Breakfast buffet was included - which was nicely done.

“Well worth it!”

My experience has been that all National Park lodges are overpriced...but this one was a better deal than most. The use of the hot springs and the ample complimentary breakfast made this stay a bargain. The location is problematic as Olympic has various entrances and all sites are remote from each other and this one is down an access road that takes 20 minutes...which google maps didn't figure in..but the Sol Duc waterfalls is a great hike you can walk to from the resort...and the dining options were the best we found in the park...On the day we checked out and moved to Lake Crescent Lodge, as prearranged, we came back here for dinner and were able to use the hot springs for free after dinner as we had been in the cabins that day. We were sorry to leave for Lake Crescent...but that turned out to be a great option as well (though more expensive when you figure in the cost of breakfast).

We found the hot springs well cared for and interesting...you have the sense that Americans aren't as aware of this location as the international crowd...Very cosmopolitan group. This is not the place to be alone...but the pools were still great and absorbed the crowd well. Best times to swim are when the pool opens and after dinner...mid-day the pools fill up with camp ground folks...and the showers are filled with the same people taking half hour showers.

Enjoyed our stay in the Sol Duc cabins. Did not experience any of the negatives found in some of the other reviews. We stayed for two nights in the middle of June so it was really before the tourist season begins and the campgrounds were nearly empty. Our room was very comfortable, clean and well maintained. The queen beds were of average comfort. Liked having the picnic table outside for snacks and meals as it probable keeps the inside of the cabins much cleaner. The cabins facing the river have the most privacy and probably less noise from the adjoining cabins. Though all the cabins were occupied it was very quiet at night. Again, school was still in session so probably not as many families as found later in the summer. The pools weren't crowded and we found them much cleaner than other reviews had talked about and they were checked both days while were there. Great to soak and look at the surrounding scenery. We had two complimentary breakfasts and they were excellent with eggs, bacon and french toast included. We also ate two dinners at the lodge and found the prepartion and quality of food very good. The chef came out both nights to visit with dinners to get feed back on their meals. The Sol Duc Falls hike is a must with beautiful scenery and views.
On the negative side, we had trouble with check out and it took over half an hour to get our bill straightened out. (same thing at Lake Quinault) We had reserved a package of three Olympic Resorts with extra days added on and the computer was unable to handle the two bookings. After much time and effort everything eventually got straightened out. At the time it was rather frustrating, especially after going through the same thing at Lake Quinault.
