There are only two places to stay when visiting Brooks Falls and that would be at the lodge (16 units) or at the campground (16 sites). I chose the former as traveling across the continent with all my camping gear as well as my camera gear would be a bit cumbersome.
The cabins are very rustic – 2 bunk bends, a toilet, shower stall and a desk. That’s it and quite frankly, that’s all you need. There are no telephones or televisions – nada on the internet service too. I overheard one of the staff talking to another guest and apparently next year the camp may get wired up for internet and cell service. Nice and sad all on the same token. Not once while I was there did I itch to watch TV or flip on my cell phone – very peaceful.
To get to Brooks Lodge you’ll need to hop on a small, twin engine Cessna in Anchorage and then change planes to an even smaller single engine plane in either King Salmon or Kulik. Definitely reminded me that I need to lose weight. Upon arrival at Brooks Lodge the weather couldn’t have been nicer – crystal blue skies and the temps were in the mid-60’s.
Meals at lodge are served buffet style and don’t get your hopes up for some gourmet meal. Don’t get me wrong, it was tasty, but it won’t be making all time favorite list either. You get a choice between two entrees, a veggie, a potato, a tossed salad, and a bowl of soup. Because there’s no Super Wal-Mart around the corner, meals can be a bit redundant. They had some form of corn soup each of the three days I was there and some sort of broccoli dish as well.
As nice as this place is, it’s MUCHO expensive – especially when traveling alone. The cost of the RT airfare is included in the overall cost, but I really don’t get how it costs approximately $1,100 (not including the $500 airfare) to house someone for two nights. The food isn’t included and they didn’t clean my room. I never expect to be pampered, but I’m wondering why it’s so expensive. I’d like to visit again, but I think I’ll go the suck it up and go the camping route next time – much cheaper at $500 for airfare plus $8/night to camp. Still though, the lodge was a great experience.
