We got there almost at sunset, so our visit was brief, but we still had a good experience. We felt warm rock heated by underground lava; walked the lava tube; saw a rare kalij (sp?) pheasant walking right along the road; looked into a beautiful, mist-filled fern gulch; and saw the latest open steam vent and a rainbow all at once. I wish we had had more time to explore. We went on a fixed- wing flight over the lava lake with Island Hoppers the next day and it completed the experience!
