“Great dinner but go elsewhere for breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2014 via mobile

We had a great dinner the first of two nights we stayed at Volcano House but I would not recommend this place for breakfast. LISA was our server & she was among the best servers we've had anywhere in the world. Ask her for recommendations & go with all of them. We did & had a great meal. Lisa was engaging & informative & a delight to talk with. We asked for her on our second night here but didn't get her & the experience was not the same. The best views are during sunset so call & ask them what time they recommend if you want to watch the sun set as you eat. Whatever you do, ask for Lisa. If you are staying overnight at Volcano House, be sure to make reservations for dinner as they fill up fast & the hotel staff does not mention this to you when you check in.

“Not good”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

Great view but food is subpar and overpriced. The bar area looks good but we had a salad and a burger and the salad was really bad while the burger special was passable.

“Skip dinner; have lunch or just drinks instead”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2014

So okay -- you've GOT to visit this restaurant/bar at least once in your life -- I don't know of anyplace else in the world where you can sit and look at a caldera/volcano!

We were visiting with 3 nieces -- their first time to the Big Island. We made the mistake of going to this restaurant for dinner. For a party of 5, 2 of us had our backs to the windows that overlooked the caldera. But our nieces are pretty and are good conversationalists, so it was still good! : ) Dinner was PRICY -- everything was a la carte. Entrees ranged from $22 to $45 or so. We ordered an appetizer of some special bread -- what a joke! Three small pieces, and some sauce to dip it in. Guess that was some expensive sauce to make! I had the pasta -- nearly inedible. It was supposed to have beets in it -- maybe they were invisible or pulverized. My husband had the steak, and he said it was good (it had better be, for the price we paid for it)!

The waitress was indifferent; the busser was very pleasant! The manager at the bar who directed us to the restaurant was obnoxious; he talked about HIS waitress, HIS this and that. Our nieces commented about this!

The best part about the experience is that one of the wait staff called out to the patrons, and told us the lights were going to be turned off for a little bit. We could really see the night glow!

IF WE HAD TO DO IT OVER AGAIN: we'd go for lunch, or, we'd go in the evening and sit in the bar and have appetizers -- then have dinner somewhere else. There is also a lounge area where people were just sitting and enjoying the view, and didn't have to buy anything! The little town of Volcano has 3-4 restaurants that looked interesting!

“Outstanding Dinner While Over Looking the Caldera!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2014

We had fantastic weather while visiting the Volcanoes National Park on our trip to the Big Island. We stayed at the Kilauea Military Camp on the Park grounds and had dinner at the Volcano House just down the road. The view of the Caldera from the Volcano House was exceptional (due to good weather) and the dinner matched. I had the Kona Kampachi (local fish farmed on the big Island) that was cooked to perfection. My wife enjoyed the stuffed chicken, which was ok, but with too much spinach that gave it little bitter taste. The coffee cheesecake was a great way to complete the dinner while viewing the volcano crater. Service was a little stuffy, but the dining room is nice with big picture windows for viewing the crater. There is also a nice bar and a lounge next to the restaurant with big chairs for enjoying cocktails while viewing the crater before dinner or after.
