“Great location and guided tours; remember there is "Camp" in the name”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2009

Arrived Monday afternoon. Cozy cabin a step up from camping. Circle Island tour on Tuesday was long but enjoyable. Wednesday tour of Hilo was nice, but be prepared for tourist traps stops at Big Island Candies, Orchid Garden, etc. Nice waterfalls. Thursday toured volcano national park which was my favorite tour. Lava tube and seeing coastline was highlight. Flew out that afternoon after tour. We did not get a rental car since we did the tours; however, this limited us to eat at the KMC cafe, Lava lounge, or Bowling alley. Or hike about 0.6 miles to Volcano House for nice but expensive meal with great view of caldera.

Be sure to pack bottled water, light sweaters or jackets for evenings, your own flashlight (ones provided are just ok), and snacks.

We plan on returning for longer stay with a rental car. I feel that staying in Hilo for a few days, in Kailua-Kona for a few days, and at KMC for a few days may be the way to go to see all the islands highlights on your own. I would also like to take a trip up to the summit of Mauna Kea for stargazing, see the lava flow at night by boat, and do the night time manta ray viewing.

Well Kept Secret. KMC is is a military resort that allows the general public to use some of the facilities. The cabins (ranging from one room to three and four rooms with kitchens, fireplaces and jetted tubs) are reserved for military/DOD (see the site's restrictions). My wife and I had a cabin with a living room, fireplace, full kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, one with a jetted tub).
What they don't say is that if you are visiting the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park you can fill your car with discounted gas (open 24 hours a day), the theater, use the camp's cafe' and have $8 sirloin steaks and even use the laundromats. The atmosphere at the cafe is not high end but the people are friendly and the food is ample.

I traveled here with my mom and my aunt in Sept. We weren't expecting a lot, just a cabin up in the mountains...but, these are so much more. We stayed for two nights in a two bedroom/two bath cabin for $120.00 per night. There was a queen bed in the "master" bedroom and two queen beds in the other bedroom, a small kitchen area (w/microwave, sink and refrigerator) and large living room area with fireplace.
The cabin smelled like firewood and we did have some ants, but HEY, its a campground. The beds were very comfortable and the tiffany style lights in the rooms were such a cute touch.
We ate breakfast at the cafeteria the next morning and it was a bargain! Big breakfast for $5.50 (we couldn't finish it!). We also took the Volcano Crater Rim Tour ($30.00 per person) with Kaipo and it was wonderful. Kaipo was very knowledgable and sooo nice...we all wanted to give him a hug afterwards! You can really tell how much Hawaiians love their culture and how proud they are of their history.
After our tour, my mom, aunt and I headed over to the Volcano Winery (about 2 miles away) and did some winetasting. For dinner, we went to the Volcano House (about 1/2 mile away) and had probably the best prime rib dinner ever, while overlooking the caldera. We only got one whole day to experience the Volcano and if I ever do go back, I would definately plan to stay longer!

We went to Big Island when my hsuband came home from R&R from Iraq. We stayed for four 3 nights in a one bedroom cabin with jetted tub. It was newly renovated with a fireplace (they charged $2 to use the fireplace logs but it was great to sit by a fire). The cabins are stand alone units and offer the ultimate in peace and quiet. It was chilly (30-50 degrees) when we were there on the volcano! We loved hiking and sightseeing throught Volcanoes Natl Park. We didnt have one problem or complaint with our stay! Great little mountain cabin, you wouldnt know you are still in Hawaii!

Keep in mind that you do have to pay the $10 admission to VNP thats good for one week and that you have to be militared affiliated, or sponsored by someone who is in order to stay here.

Best things we did on Big Island - Hike to the active Lava flow, Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tour, swimming in the warm springs in Puna, looking at the stars at night.

We stayed at KMC in July 08. We rented a 3 room apartment but were given a 4 bedroom. We had 3 bedrooms with 2 twin beds in each and one bedroom with Queen bed. We had a full bath as well as a half bath. The room wasn't anything fancy but it was clean and comfortable.

Even though you must be military to stay in KMC, anyone can use the facilities. This made is difficult to enjoy some of the extras. We were only there for the weekend and had hope to take our kids bowling. The small bowling alley and snack bar were being used for birthday parties for friends/family of the employees most of Saturday and Sunday. The game room was more of a hangout for the local teenagers and young adults, than for the families staying at KMC. We had to wait to do our laundry because the laundry facilities were being used by an employee (still in uniform) for personal laundry and by campers of VNP. We ate most meals at the buffet and found the food to be good but not great. It was nice not having to drive back into town and look for something to eat.

While we didn't find the typical family friendly atmosphere that we have found at other military only installations, we did see a different side of Hawaii that didn't include palm trees and tropical beaches but was beautiful all the same.

If you qualify to stay at KMC and are planning a visit to the Big Island I can highly recommend doing so. We stayed Oct 15 -18 in a one bedroom with jetted tub for around $130 a night. It was quiet, clean and the bed super comfortable. The fireplace was nice during the cooler evenings. You can either use a pre made fire log ($2.25 at the camp store) or real wood. They sell bundles at the camp store for just under $10 and fire starters for around $5. We opted for the fire logs as we seemed to have a hard time staying awake after tromping around the park all day.

The camp has a small (10 lane I think) bowling alley ($2.75 a game plus rental shoes). There is a "general store" with reasonable prices. A gas station. The cafe has a buffet nightly for $12.95 and it is a bargain compared to eating outside the camp. The food is really good considering it is buffet style and they have at least 3 entrées each evening. There is a really good salad, soup and dessert. One evening (Friday) there was a hula show put on by the local school, it was quite interesting. There is a bar that seemed nice, we never had a drink in it but did walk through. A game room with tons of video games and pool tables.

The staff was very attentive and friendly. Just walking around you can see all sorts of birds in the Ohi'a trees and we even saw a Ne Ne on the lawn in front of the office.

There is a huge varity of options for rent from a bed in a dorm to 3 bedroom with full kitchen.

I love visiting the Volcano National Park and there’s no better place to stay (on the entire island) than KMC. This past trip was my third visit and it was once again fantastic. You get amazing access to the park by staying here. I clear most trails looong before the first tourist bus pulls up. Plus it’s a short drive to the lava flow/ocean entry point at Kalapana.

Don’t let the ‘rustic’ outside fool you – the cabins are amazing. I booked a one bedroom apartment with jacuzzi but. After a full day of hiking the tub is a lifesaver. Higher rank means higher rent here, but it’s still the best deal anywhere on the island.
