“Very Cool!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2013

Must see at the Volcano park! Thurston Lava Tube is a very large unique tunnel located a few minutes from Crater Rim Drive. This is an attraction that anyone in your party can partake in. The tube provides you with access to the inner workings of lava flow. It is cool to see the formations created when lava met rock hundreds of years ago and the formations that have generated over the years since. The tunnel itself is well lit and easy to navigate. It can be slippery at times so take precaution. Should only take 20-25 minutes for the entire trip.

“A "tame" lava tube”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2013

If you can't make it through the more natural lava tube in Hilo, this is the place for you to experience a tamed version - there are still some stairs, but the bottom of the lava tube is paved (not totally flat, but pretty good) - easy parking across the road, bathroom to the left (easy to miss if you don't know about it) - and you can walk through a full section of the lava tube. The extended portion was closed off when we arrived. No local fee, just the one to get into the park.

“Really, a review of the whole volcano park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2013

This was our first experience with a real rainforest, and boy does it live up to its name. Because of the volcanic activity that's been going on since 2008, some of the more challenging hikes were closed when we went, which was certainly unfortunate, but being in the presence of such majesty was truly breathtaking. We took pictures of absolutely everything, which was a bit embarrassing when we actually went back through them. So wonderful, I would love to go back.

“Very Interesting and Cool Volcanic Site!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2013

We linked visiting this with hiking the Kilauea Iki trail and I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys adventure and hiking.

The Thurston Lava Tube was a very large, unique "tunnel" which was a portion of lava flow previously, shaping and forming the inside of the tube with many unique features. The hike through the tube was easy to do and fun, seeing how lava had cut through the rock and since how water had developed other features as well.

A cool little stop to see! Something unique with few places to experience walking where lava had once flowed on this entire planet.

“Easy, fast stop”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2013

This is a easy to to get to lava tube, although it is not handicap accessible. It is definitely family friendly stop, with an easy walk though the rain forest.
