Growing up with horses, I was adamant about being sure to go horseback riding while my husband and I visited Maui last weekend. We went on Sunday and our guide, Char, was informative and friendly with a great personality. She gave us history and facts about the ranch we rode on, as well as information & fun facts about the horses we rode. My horse, Trace, had great character & I thoroughly enjoyed riding him. It is obvious that these horses are well cared for.
The ride itself was good. The views were wonderful. I was a little bummed that we weren't able to break into a canter at any point during the ride. (understandably we couldn't have done that on the rocky trails, but once out in the open fields it would have been nice to trot or at least canter) At no point did Char allow us to do so. That's mainly the reason my rating is 4 stars versus 5. Being a seasoned rider I wanted to be able to have a little more freedom.
I wasn't impressed with an older gentleman who came to help us saddle up before the ride started. (not sure if this was the owner or not) He wasn't friendly & was pretty short with most of us as he helped a few others in our group mount their horses. I'm glad it wasn't him who led the tour, as I don't think it would have been as enjoyable for me.
Overall, it was a good experience & I'm glad we did it. Next time I'll just have to do more research as far as which gaits we will be able to ride on our horses. Just walking wasn't what I was hoping for.
