We just returned from a Celebrity Cruise to Hawaii and one of the off boat tours was this excursion to the top of Halekala volcano to see the sunrise and to bike down 28 miles. Being over 50 I was a little apprehensive but the crew was very informative and helpful. They provided us with all the equipment we needed ,fitted us with the right size bike and helmet, and made sure we were comfortable and reassured us they would check in with us after 15 minutes to make sure we hadn't changed our mind or had seconds thoughts once we started down the mountain. It was a once in a life time experience that I'm glad I had the opportunity to do. If you take your time the scenery is breath taking. I certainly would recomend this trip. The bike company was very informative and helpful and I would definetly go back to them.

We booked Haleakala Bike Co because my niece used the company and told me how fun it was. We were cruising in March 2008 and were in Maui for 2 days; our cruise ship did not offer this excursion so we booked it before we went. We found out later that Jeremy took alot of heat for booking us because we were not at the harbor closest to the shop! But for what it's worth---thanks Jeremy, we had a blast!!! And I think you should offer it to those peple who cruise out of Lahaina!

Anyone that wants to see a little piece of heaven should do this tour. It's cold and you have to get up at an ungodly hour, but it's worth it. After meeting at the bike company, you're taken up the mountain 10,000 + feet to watch the most spectacular sunset. Then you're taken part way down the mountain and given gear, a map and a bike and off you go. Since the tour is unguided, you go at your own pace with your own friends. It's nice because we saw other tours (guided) who needed to go single file and stop when the guide said to stop, etc. We did our own thing and it worked out fine. The ride is not the easiest--you use your brakes quite a bit, and your hands get numb from squeezing them. Stop half way down at the lodge for a great breakfast! The staff were all great and I would definitely recommend it. Put this on your bucket list!

We are an active couple in our early thirties, and found this activity to be dangerous and NOT FUN at all. We opted for the "express tour". Basically, we paid $62 per person only to be dropped off on the side of the busy road, have safety rules quickly shouted at us, given a map (and told to disregard the map if we got lost), given horrible equipment, and sent on our way. The seats were extremely uncomfortable. We were hurting for days after. After we dropped our bikes back at the shop, we saw that there were bikes with more comfortable seats. We were not fitted with bikes before making it up the volcano. Instead, we were simply told "here's a medium and a large bike" at the top.

There are no real markers to find your way back. It's a dangerous treck with cars flying by, so heed all warnings. The following day, we drove to the top of the summit. It was safer and we were able to enjoy the scenery much more. Additionally, there are places to hike in the park so you'll still get physical activity. Save your money. Pay the $10 to drive through the park, hike, take pictures, and spend the rest of your afternoon walking around Haiku. We wish we would have known all of this before wasting our money.
