We are not morning people so we skipped the sunrise viewing and went there for sunset. It was quite gorgeous. At sunset you are actually not viewing the crater but looking down the mountain (sunrise is crater side, sunset is the other side facing away from the crater). But it is really colorful and beautiful.
Most people got up and left as soon as the sun went beneath the clouds (yes, you are looking down on the clouds--pretty breathtaking). But we stayed a bit to watch the sky change colors even more as it got darker.
Another bonus to sunset is that there are not many people up there.
Do wear at least jeans and a sweatshirt as it is actually chilly.
The air is very thin up there so keep that in mind if you plan to hike at all. I wanted to do part of the Sliding Sands trail but I found out that in the late afternoon, it is cast in a pretty dark shadow by a large cinder cone. That, combined with the thin air kept me and my friends from hiking at all.
The drive up and down is dramatically steep and is a nerve wracking ride if you have issues with heights.
Very much worth it. Make sure you know where you'll eat dinner, as you may get back to your lodging pretty late.
