Our first day on Maui we drove around to Hana (as all dutiful tourists must do) and then continued on to Ohe'o Gulch, part of the Haleakala National Park. There are the freshwater pools below the road near the visitor center, but the best part of the area for us was the hike up the hill to the waterfall. It is about 1 1/2 to 2 miles up, with beautiful views of the stream on the right side of the trail. There is a bamboo forest along part of the trail with bamboo at least 50 feet tall, swaying in the breeze and making bamboo music as they smack into each other. The falls are impressive although you have to cross the stream a few times to get to the pool at the base; if the stream is high this might be tricky. After returning to the visitor center, a dip in the pools below was quite refreshing! I would highly recommend starting early in the morning for the drive to Hana, as the road is very narrow and twisty, and the road to Ohe'o Gulch is even narrower and twistier, if that's possible.
