We stayed one night at his hotel in April 2004. We had driven over from Las Vegas where we were spending the Spring Break, and were very glad that we did so. It's a perfect location, as you are right in the park and can get to the south rim easily.
Initially when I tried to book up in February, I found that all of the rim lodges were already full and the only one available was the Yavapai so felt I had to take second best. I read up this site to a check it out, and initially was a bit worried about booking, but I didn't seem to have any real choice if I wanted to stay in the National Park.
I was very happy however with this hotel. The lodges are contained in a couple of dozen buildings scattered amongst the pine trees with more than adequate parking for each location. They are on two floors only.
The quality of the room was very good. In fact I would say that it was better than the Aladdin Hotel in the centre of the Las Vegas strip where we were staying for our main holiday. It had for instance a refrigerator and coffee-making facilities, neither of which the flash Las Vegas location had.
Soundproofing was fairly reasonable, although you could here people moving around at about 5:45am, about 20 minutes before sun up. It is worth getting up early and seeing the sights of the Grand Canyon at sunrise, it really is stunningly beautiful. Also it isn't far to the rim from this hotel, you're bound to have a car and therefore it really is only a couple of minutes and no big deal you aren't at the "rim lodges".
One recommendation I can make is that you should eat at the restaurant in El Tovar. This is the old rim hotel which was the original building here, and it has an absolutely first class restaurant. They are the only place you can pre book and normally only take reservations 30 days in advance, however when I rang up 60 days in advance they took my reservation as I was ringing from London. I asked for a window seat, and that's when I got. The quality of the food and the waiting was absolutely first class, something I really did not expect in such a location.
Overall therefore, don't feel as if you are taking second class by having to stay at the Yavapai. It is more than adequate and a good location to be in the National Park south rim village.
