“Good Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

Stayed here as part of the Grand Canyon Railway package. We were in the North section of the lodge, which is touted as the better part. It was nice, but not great, which makes me wonder what the South section is like. The lodge is really a collection of buildings around the main building. Even with the map they give you, it is not easy to find your building/room. The park shuttle stops in front of the main building, which makes it easy to get around the park. Also, you can walk to the south rim in about 10 minutes. The lodge is OK for a short stay, but could be better.

Room Tip: Ask for Northern Section.

I don't know what everyone is complaining about. We were in bldg 6 we had a typical hotel room that was clean and comfortable. A nice walk to the rim, not far from the cafeteria which was reasonable and decent food. It did get pretty chilly outside and the room was plenty warm enough. $92 is a little price for this type of room but then considering the location, it's to be expected. Our only disappointment was the weather!

Our family of four, with a 6 year-old with Special Needs and occasionally in a wheelchair, stayed here in March, 2013.

I was pleased with a number of features: there is **plenty** of handicapped parking and regular parking, right in front of all rooms. It is quiet, in a quiet location, with excellent sound barriers between rooms. We never had to worry about whatever noises upsetting our child or, if our child got upset or was screaming, we didn't have to worry about deranging our neighbors. There were many smooth paths to wheel up to the cafeteria (which was terrific for our vegetarian / vegan family, plus they staff there were really helpful in carrying trays to help us) plus easy paths to the rim itself.

Maswik is really close to the shuttle route for Hermits Rest route, right where it + Bright Angel meet. Unfortunately there was inconvenient construction going on at Bright Angel when we were there, so literally + figuratively there was a little bumpy path. We survived. A part of me wishes we'd stayed in one of the lodges on the rim itself (but not El Tovar because I just don't think it would have been as Accessible for our youngest), but then there would have been near-constant people outside our window plus their noise ... so that's a fair trade-off, I suppose.

When we needed a smooth, even lawn area for our youngest to safely run around, we did take advantage of the lawn outside Thunderbird / Kachina Lodges. (our eldest child was happy kicking his soccer ball around the vast open area just outside our Maswik room)

As a family, esp with younger kids, eating at the cafeteria @ Maswik was preferable because of the varied food choices plus that it was open all day, no waiting. We did also eat a few times in other restaurants within the Park (only one which is jumping out at me right now is Bright Angel Lodge's restaurant), and it was fine. But, there was a wait for the food (of course, to be expected). As we'd arrived first thing in the morning there was no wait for a table, but the restau quickly filled so we saw others waiting. I have to say the service we received at Bright Angel Lodge restau was lovely. Our youngest was raring to go, so he and I decided to go expend some energy outside the restau whilst waiting for food. Another staff member saw us coming so got his wheelchair out for us. She wasn't our waitress, but for whatever reason we had registered with her and she was trying to be helpful. (we didn't need the chair because he wanted to RUN!) But I was really, really touched by this. Also, our youngest is a messy eater -- cannot use utensils, only his hands, and approximately 50% of his food ends up on his chair / floor. We always try to do some cleaning-up after him, but to my mind the mark of a good restau is if the staff tells us not to, that they will be happy to clean. And they met the mark! They stopped us from cleaning and wished us well.

Anyway, our trip to Grand Canyon was a success for all of us, and staying in Maswik was a good piece of it. My only nit would be, of course, how insanely expensive it is to stay within (any of our national) park(s). I understand it's a premium and we paid for it, but ouch. It was the right choice as we were right there, didn't have to fight traffic coming in, parking, going out every day.

We stayed at the Maswik Lodge for 2 nights in May. Although the location is obviously very good the property itself is not nice at all. Our room was really dark when we entered and smelled awful, it was in great need of some airing. It didn't feel particularly clean, perhaps due to the smell, and we didn't want to spend too much time in there at all. This was a shame as after touring round the canyon you need a place to relax, we didn't feel we could do this here. The restaurant area is like a suermarket style cafeteria. The food is ok but it's not a particularly nice place to eat, more of a grab something and go type place.
As we were on our honeymoon we were really dissappointed by this hotel.

This lodge is in a great location very short walk from rim. Room very dated and just about clean.
Only view from room was a tree and railway track. Landing outside room was dirty and hadnt been cleaned giving poor first impression. Room has everything you need for short stay if you want to be close to rim. If we stayed again it would be at a newer hotel on edge of park.

Room Tip: Ask for room with balcony or patio so you can sit outside after dark.

The room was big but dated, however this did not really matter to us. The pleasure of staying so close to the south rim made it worth it. The only slight bother, was that the restaurant wouldn't let us take beer back to our room, and the village is so hard to navigate.

Check in process went smoothly....room was quiet....bed was decent...but my oh my has this lodge seen some miles.

Like going back to the 70's.

Crazy expensive given the age / condition of the property.

Bonus points for being clean....but if you paid $200 dollars to stay at this hotel virtually anywhere else the room better come with a hooker or a pole dancer.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else if you want a " good " room. This hotel is tired...tired...tired.
