“Basic Hotel, Awesome Location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2012

If you’re expecting an opulent hotel, DON’T stay here. If you’re looking for an adequate room in the National Park, this will work for you. Previous reviews stated that there is NO air conditioning in the rooms, which was a concern. When I made my reservation, I asked about air conditioning, and when we checked into our adjoining rooms, both had noisy but functional A/C. As far as the rooms go, they are basic, two queen beds, television, and a full bath. Pretty basic, but when you’re at the Grand Canyon, why are you spending time in your room? We were out all day exploring, got home late, and went to bed. Woke up early the next day, and we were off exploring. Thus, the adequate room was sufficient for our visit to the Grand Canyon.
The location of the Maswik is awesome. You are a five minute walk to the rim. There is a shuttle stop at the Maswik, which will get you anywhere you need to go. There is a small gift shop, and a food court all at the Maswik. We at breakfast each morning at the food court, and it was always good, and we ate something different each morning. If you need the general store (which has everything) it will take you ten minutes on the shuttle to get there. If you are looking for nicer restaurants, The Arizona Room is a nice steak house, and The El Tovar is the fancy restaurant in the park. Both of these restaurants are a ten minute walk from Maswik. After dark, from the El Tovar, take a leisurely stroll around the grounds and be on the lookout for deer and elk. They come down to this area after dark to eat the grass. Don’t forget to bring a flashlight. And if you’re from a big city, don’t forget to look up and enjoy the constellations shining brilliantly every night.

Room Tip: At night make sure to take a stroll around the El Tovar. The deer and elk love to come over there a...

The Maswik lodges are very basic. There is no airconditioner in the room; they do provide fans but they are not very efficient. If you open the window to let fresh air in, people can see in as they walk past your room so that option is out while you're sleeping. The pillows were as flat as a pancake which made for an uncomfortable sleep. Apart from those issues, the rooms were clean (although quite out-dated) and staff at the front desk were pleasant.

We wanted to stay within the park and were delighted to be able to secure one night at the Maswik Lodge. In park accommodation is expensive and books up months in advance. We checked on Xanterra website everyday and got lucky one day - it seems cancellations sometimes appear online - we did not choose Maswik over any other in park lodge - it was the only one which became available.

The lodge is located in the National Park, and comprises of a main reception and cafeteria plus numerous accommodation blocks. Parking was plentiful near our lodge in the north block (Mesquite).

Reception was very busy, but staff were very helpful and check-in was quick and efficient. Our king room was large and comfortable for 2 people. We had a small terrace with 2 chairs, accessible from patio doors (first floor rooms had a small balcony). The room had a small fridge. Breakfast was not included but available in the nearby cafeteria which we did not use.

The location of our lodge was a 5 minute walk to the Hermit’s Rest bus interchange. At night the area was really dark and excellent for stargazing. The whole area takes on a different perspective after dark when it is quiet and the day tourists have left.

As the accommodation is so close to the bus stop, we were able to watch the sunset and then go out again early to watch the sunrise over the canyon. A magical experience and feasible when staying in the park.

This is a lodge in a national park, and not a resort with lots of amenities, if you are looking for designer hotel with lots of facilities - this is not the place for you. However if you are visiting the area for the natural beauty of the Grand Canyon, it’s location was superb. It was a much calmer and experience than staying in a chain hotel in Tusayan the night before, and we felt it was much better value for money.

We would happily stay at Maswik lodge again.

We wanted to stay in the park and even two months before it was hard to find a room. We could book just one night. The room was clean and equipped we every thing we needed. There was also a small fridge,so we could buy something small to eat in the nearby general store.

Good size room for a family, only two beds so children had to share! Lodge style accommodation which you would expect in a national park. Within walking distance to the rim and close to the cafeteria. Room was warm and had enough facilities to keep us happy for our stay. Also look at the cabins that overlook the canyon, they would be great for couples. It's great to stay at the canyon

We reserved a cabin for two nights but checked out after only one. Dirty, outdated and gross. Bedding was disgusting. Also, the cafeteria food was way overpriced and not good. The only positive is the location.

We are sorry to hear your room at Maswik didn't meet expectations. We strive to provide the best experience for our guests and are unhappy we didn't fulfill that obligation.

We chose the Maswik Lodge North based on other reviews. All four of us could fit into one room and it had air-conditioning. Check-in went smoothly and the room was clean and somewhat spacious. We mainly got the room because of the air conditioning but we didn't even need it (mid-July). We requested a room upstairs and got it and we were able to park the car right in front of the building. I was told that we were 1/4 mile away from the room but it only took us a few minutes and were were at the rim (by the Bright Angel trail). The "mess hall" looked like a cafeteria you would see in summer camp. I read some bad reviews about the food but it was actually pretty good.
