Second stay here. Five hour drive from Las Vegas. Which is more exciting/relaxing? Ocean side vacation or Grand Canyon side vacation. Hard to decide. We parked in front of the hotel and engaged a porter at check-in. Good advice because there are no elevators, and finally parking can be a hike away. We lucked out in a delux room, 6437. Luck because it's a corner room on the first floor level. Sheets and towel are thin. It's a park lodge, not a Marriott. Like last visit two years ago we did have elk grazing outside our room. No secret that ranger walks are fun and sunrise and sunset views are free. Elevation or dehyration bothered me a bit and I had little appetite for the good fancy, must make reservations , restaurant here. Lighter fare at the bargain priced lodge next door. Is it Bright Angel? Temperatures in April are fine for me, maybe high of sixty...one day it sleeted for an hour or so. Elk were jumping around. Don't pet em' Not legal or safe. Jim back in Ohio

From the moment I walked in to the El Tovar, I loved it. It truly is a beautiful old lodge, within in steps of the rim of the Grand Canyon. I stayed in a small room (standard size bed), and while small, was still a beautiful, clean room with a partial view of the Grand Canyon! I loved that you could open the windows and let the fresh air flow in. Both evenings I was there, I had drinks on the small patio outside of their cocktail lounge. The drinks were fantastic, and again, the views were stunning! I had breakfast in the dining room at the El Tovar, and it was great! I would highly recommend this lodge, as well as their dining facilities!

Room Tip: If you want a little more space, getting a larger bed (king or queen) might offer you that space.

The view is amazing! We ate dinner and breakfast here it was great both times. The breakfast steak quesadilla is probably the best thing I have ever had for breakfast! At dinner I had the Southwest corn chowder which was so good! The buffalo ribeye was a little fatty. Our server Rita was excellent she was very attentive to our tired party of 8! We had to stay at Kachina Lodge next door because El Tovar was sold out. Kachina is more like a dorm but being right next door you can go and hang out in the gorgeous lobby and sit on the porch it is not so bad!

Room Tip: Ask for a rim view

Hubby and I visited the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, staying in the El Tovar Hotel during early April. It was an experience we will never forget and one that far surpassed our expectations. From the incredibly gorgeous, panoramic views from the Hotel Rim Trail to the dark, rustic and classic interior of the hotel itself, photos are just not adequate. We felt like tiny specks when standing at the edge of the enormous and never-ending Canyon and like modern intruders into the elegant world of Teddy Roosevelt and other famous historical figures when standing in the Hotel El Tovar foyer or dining room. Some people might call the hotel outdated or in need of a facelift, we call it authentic and ageless. Everywhere you look are old brass fixtures, dark woodwork and paneling, mounted animal heads and Native American accents.

We stayed in the Solarium Suite, which is located on the main floor. (If you are looking to book one of the 10 or so suites, you will need to call the hotel directly to ask for one, well in advance of your stay.) Featuring its own huge balcony and overlooking the train station and woods, the Solarium Suite is decorated with antique furniture, framed historical black and white photos of the hotel and its guests, and a carved four poster king-sized bed in the bedroom. There is a separate and very large living room. Modern amenities include plush and comfortable bedding and linens, 2 large flat screen tvs, and in the large and modern bathroom, lots of toiletries and a blow dryer. Yes, the suite was pricey, but this was a bucket list item that was worth the price to us. Besides, the huge balcony was ideal for me to set up the tripod and camera and to practice some astrophotography of that overwhelming Canyon sky and its stars. And in the morning, it was wonderful to just roll out of that comfy suite and be just a few steps away from one of the world’s most amazing wonders.

One final note. I know the reviews about the El Tovar Restaurant have been mixed. Our experience there was very positive. We had made reservations to eat dinner about a month in advance. When we arrived, although it was a busy night, we were shown to our table exactly on time. It was not a table with an outside view but a very comfortable interior table. The restaurant is very dark and almost brooding, but that does lend a mysterious and romantic atmosphere that we enjoyed. Hubby and I both ordered filets that came with fresh asparagus and new potatoes. Almost to our surprise, all the food was delicious and you could have cut the filets with a fork. The service was also excellent. We enjoyed everything about our meal and recommend eating there.

In sum, don’t pass up staying at the famous El Tovar Hotel if you are going to the GC. It will be one of your favorite vacation and lifetime memories!

Room Tip: Call well in advance, up to a year ahead, to reserve a room. If you don't want to carry you...

Wow! Where do I start? I fell in love with El Tovar and its atmosphere! Our mangager's suite was fabulous- perfect for a family of five. The two Q beds were able to be closed off from the bathroom and separate living area. There were couches, accent chairs, and a small dining table with chairs. The room was very clean and very much updated- and I am picky about this sort of thing. I am sure the other lodging accomodations are fine, but El Tovar was the only choice for me.

We had stayed in Las Vegas for a couple of nights before arriving here.
The location is fantastic but you pay for it of course - you couldn't have a greater contrast.
The room we had was good but on the top floor with no lift meant we had to carry our bags up and found out that the altitude didn't help. Our room had a partial canyon view which we didn't expect.
We ate in the cocktail bar on the first night as an easy option and liked it so much we did the same the following night.
There was coffee making in the room but they put it on fresh on the mezzanine floor from 6 to 11a.m. which we found better than making our own.

Stayed here for one night and scheduled our tour of the National Parks around this reservation. We knew from reading other posts that we should temper our expectations. Hotel has a quaint ambiance, rooms were small and dated. The maid should have vacuumed under the armoire that housed the flat screen TV. Great location and the price was not unreasonable. We knew that there were no rooms available with a view when we booked, although there are suites that do have them. We ate dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and had very good meals and service. It was nice to walk out of the hotel, right on to Bright Angel Trail for a hike down in to the canyon. I will agree with another poster who said that the parking lot was small and usually filled. All in all a good experience.
