“True adventurers.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

The guys (the Kolb brothers) helped catalog (on film) the early history of the Grand Canyon National Park...circa 1911. The studio is a must see for every first-time visitor. Take the time to watch the film in the building's lower level

“There's no "There" There....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2012

Tiny and perfectly cute, with a great view over the canyon -- but WTH? There is not ONE SINGLE Kolb photograph on display. A sign indicates that the entire lot of photos is in an Arizona archive and is available online. That said, couldn't they provide a dedicated terminal so visitors could see at least some of the brothers' work? Along one inaccessible wall they've hung a group of modern oil paintings of various generic canyon scenes, but you cannot actually get close enough to see them and have to content yourself with postcard size reproductions attached to a railing. Who designed this exhibit anyway? The main point of the place seems to be to get you into the gift shop ... and it sure seems misleading to advertise this as a Kolb museum when it's missing the essential element

“Fabulous building and phenomenal story”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2012

We were fortunate to be there to see the exhibit on the Kolb Brothers, who were extraordinary individuals in the early days of the park. Excellent artifacts and curation of their story. Apparently their living quarters can only be toured during winter months when rangers have more time; we'll be back for that insider look.

“Must Visit Location to Understand the Grand Canyon in the Early 1900's”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2012

This combination museum, art gallery, gift shop and movie theater (of the Kolb films) is definitely worht a visit. The building itself is an architectural wonder as it clings to the side of the Canyon. There were exhibits and films worth viewing here. Must stop location to better understand the early attempts to capitalize on the Grand Canyon as a place of exploration and for tourists.

A little history: The Kolb Studio was built (1904) by brothers Ellsworth and Emery Kolb, photographers who made a living by photographing visitors walking down the Bright Angel Trail on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. In 1911-1912, the Kolb Brothers filmed their journey down the Green and Colorado Rivers. Emery Kolb showed this movie regularly in his studio until 1976, when he died at the age of 95. Today, the same building serves as an art gallery, museum, gift shop and exhibit of the work of the Kolb Brothers.

“Great Views & Interesting Exhibit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2012

This building is the studio where the Kolb Brothers, who photographed and made movies during the early years of tourism in the canyon, worked and lived. They had a really interesting exhibit about archaeology in the Grand Canyon when I was there. The studio literally clings to the rim of the canyon-it's a neat place to stop.
