“Highline Trail - Loop”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2010

Have just been away last 4 days in Glacier. The highline trail is amazing. It starts off a little scary with sharp cliffs on one side, while you are walking along a rock wall holding on to a cable. But the views are breath-taking. We did it on the 17/07/10 and did half of it as a ranger-led hike, upto Haystack Butte. Lots of interesting information. The trail is definitely safe to complete now. We went through independently as the rangers were only doing the first 1/3rd of it, because of a couple of treacherous snowbridges. There are a LOT of people there already, so if you want peace and quiet, this is not the place. We saw many mountain goats, deer and marmots.
We got to the parking lot at Logan's Pass around 830 and half the car park was full. So if you plan to drive, get there early.
The trail starts above treeline and descends from there slowly. After Granite Chalet, the rest of the Loop trail is through the forest and sharply downhill (not easy on the knees). Lots of wildflowers along the way. Beautiful scenery and definitely recommended.

“the highline trail is iconic...worth the crowded trail”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2010

the highline trail is a great dayhike if you want to get out of your car but still see a lot of the park. good overlooks, lots of scenery change, and i almost always see mountain goats, bighorn sheep and marmots on this trail.

it's a relatively easy hike because it's mostly downhill from logan's pass. granite park chalet is the perfect spot to rest and eat lunch and stare at heaven's peak. from there the trail down to the Loop is knee-pounding and repetitive, so i would recommend hiking over swiftcurrent pass instead, if you can make it the extra few miles. and the swiftcurrent mountain lookout is absolutely worth the trudge.

“Put it on your bucket list”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2010

I have been to glacier 3 times and this is by far my favorite hike thus far. The views are endless. I had read about this hike before going and found it amusing that it is often noted that minor logjams develop on the narrow portions of the trail, because people stop to take so many pictures. Then I became one of those people - I just was constantly enthralled by the views.
I did this hike in late August 09 and it had actually snowed the night before the hike. It was unseasonably cold and we experienced several different climate changes on this long hike - from being hot in a t-shirt to being very cold when it rained in our rain gear.
Although the hike is long it is not very hard. The hardest part was the knee pounding descent.

“This is a MUST DO hike...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2009

If you come to GNP, you must hike the Highline Trail. I'll admit, I was a bit worried about the drop off at the start of the trail (Garden Wall area) but once faced with it, I realized that it is not as scary as the pictures make it out to be. Even if you are afraid of heights - force yourself to walk this 100 yard stretch of the trail - once you are past this part the trail opens up and around every turn your mouth will drop with the beauty that waits you. This is the one trail you MUST DO if you go to GNP. I am so glad I listened to my wife and put the Garden Wall fears behind me. It is one hike that is etched in my mind forever.

“best hike in GNP”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2009

Glacier National Park is the best, and the best hike here that I have been on is the Highline Trail. You start at Logans Pass at the Continental Divide and will enjoy spectacular panoramic views because you are at height. Make sure to check that this trail is open (usually mostly thaws in 1st wk of July), and believe me, you won't be disappointed. Also, while the hike is long, it is relatively flat and was not as tiring as Grinnell Glacier, which is much shorter. Another benefit is that if you have 2 cars, you can leave one car at the end of the trail and make it a 1-way trip. It doesn't get any better than this- the most beautiful hike in the most scenic national park!
