“Surprised at how good and original this was. A must eat!”

Congratulations to 229 Park. After a recommendation from our rafting guide and a hint of Hollywood (supposedly the caterer for Sean Penn's crew when filming INTO THE WILD) to lure us here, we were pleasantly surprised to find a bright open restaurant with a feel of danish design, great wood tones, and a pleasant buzz. The menu was creative, fresh and truly inspired. I believe their claim that almost everything is made on site, and much is grown locally or sources local produce. All of our items would put any big city restauranteur to shame, but pulling this off in the middle of nowhere is a miracle. Usually my reviews go into a detailed list of what we ate - but for here I will leave it as 'all great'. There truly was not a bad item we tried - from starters to desserts. With a menu that offers 'Tavern Fare' and 'Entrees' you can spend a little or a lot. We fed four including desserts and two beers for $90. While some entrees go into the $30 range, many great large plates can be had for $15. But here size doesn't matter - its all about taste. Expect to wait for a table if you show up after 6:45, no reservations, and the word clearly is growing about this place. We ate at most places in town, and this wins hands down as the best food in town. Well worth the 10 mile drive south from the Visitor Center.

We stopped in for Sunday night dinner after visiting Denali NP, and were shocked and amazed by the flavor of the food we tried. The wine list is good, and they had local beer on tap. But by far the best attribute is the menu - organic and simple, with portions that are just right to allow you to try dessert.

I live in Chicago and have access to all sorts of great places to eat, yet 229 Parks was better than most I've been to.

Don't miss this one if you are anywhere near Denali!

“Best food of our Alaska trip but expect to pay”

Overall: You have to pay for it, but this was probably the best dinner we had in our 10-day trip to South Central Alaska.

Food: "Fresh, organic, creative" was someone's description on the TripAdvisor forums, and I'd agree. Appetizer was an heirloom tomato flatbread, a deceptively simple dish that rests on the freshness and variety of the tomatoes used. Entrees ordered were the rabbit, lamb rack, and tenderloin. The only relatively minor complaint was that the rabbit dish was a bit busy (too many flavors that didn't completely mesh into a whole), and parts of the same dish (mainly near the bones) were slightly undercooked. The tenderloin was cooked perhaps a little more medium than medium rare but not enough to complain about; the truffle-infused porcini butter topping was as rich as it sounds. The lamb rack had that diner almost gnawing on the bones to get every last bit off. The entrees were each accompanied by a small salad with a dressing particular to that dish, some kind of starch (fingerling potatoes or chick peas), and a steamed vegetable medley. Seasoning, aside from the busy-ness of the rabbit dish, was not over or under-done. Dessert, a home-made ice cream sandwich, was of a large enough size to split 3-ways and like the appetizer was simple but well executed. Portions were filling but not over-large.

Service: Slow at times, but the server checked often enough and was friendly. Unlike some of our other experiences in tourist areas, we never felt like we were being rushed out the door.

Value: Entrees run $25-40, but this was acceptable to me due to the quality of the food and overall experience.

Decor: Bright, clean, and very open. Lots of windows to let in the sunlight. Overall effect is very inviting.

I worked in Denali when they 1st opened. Once we ate there we went back as much as possible. Great service from the bar to the dining room. Best food I've ever had and I've lived all over this country. Not to be missed.
