“Wonderful place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2009

We stayed at the Cedar Hotel at the Denali Grizzly Bear Cabins and Campgrounds. It is brand-new and beautiful. You feel like you are staying in a log cabin. All rooms have a private balcony that look out onto a river and trees. The room was spotless, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the location was great- if you have a car. It's about 10 minutes south of the entrance to Denali National Park. There is one restaurant in walking distance. We went on the bus tour advertised on their website and it was wonderful as well- they pick you up right in front of the office. The cabins looked nice from the outside, and the campsites were quiet--there were people there, but it wasn't crazy.

My students and I have camped at DGB for the past 16 years. The grounds are always neat and the owners go out of their way to accommodate us. I've read the comments about the staff. Perhaps the language barrier is the problem, since many are from Eastern Europe during the summer. Internet is available in and near the main lodge, all night if necessary. Very convenient to DNP.

Come on people! You're in Alaska! You chose a cabin to stay in! We purposely searched for cabins to stay at during our 4 day drive around Denali and Seward. Grizzly was 100% fine! we were beside the river, loved the fact that we were surrounded by wildlife. All the cabins have a great setting.
Although there is no breakfast available here - just go across the road and the resort there has a breakfast buffet that is decent that you pay for on the way out.
You have a car, use the cabin as your base, get to Denali super early, make sure you book an early trip. We went on the green shuttle bus, our driver gave us soooooo much information. We wondered if the beige shuttle bus (way more expensive, but apparently 'narrated') got the same amount of info!
Comfy beds, decent bathroom - you guys are not in Vegas - staying at the Fairmount - enjoy the rustic Alaskan livin!

We stayed in one of the cabins for a couple nights as part of our 2 week trip around Alaska.

a) We got there at 9:15PM. The office has a sign saying they are open till 10, but it was locked up tight already . No note about 'we'll be back soon, etc'.

We drove around and found a maintenance guy who showed us where they pinned info about our rental.

b) They advertise that they offer an internet connection. Not at the cabins though. They don't tell you that though. That first night, I wound up driving over to the , which is right across the street, has a well lit, staffed lobby with comfy chairs. I surfed the web for a couple hours. The next day the Grizzly said we could park outside their office to surf the web. No thanks. It's cold and dark. I'd spend more on gas than it's worth. The front desk person was unapologetic.

d) The cabins overlook a river (it's down a steep drop so you can't really see the river, but you hear it. The handrail on the porch should be repaired, considering the drop off.

And overall, the cabin was past its prime / well worn.

This place is very convenient to the Park and our hotel room was quite spacious for 4 adults. We also enjoyed the view of the river. However, we did have some problems with our stay. The staff was impersonable and/or clueless and the room wasn't cleaned well during our trip. On the second night we realized that they had only rinsed out the coffee mug instead of cleaning it or replacing it with a new one. How many times have they done this before and was the mug even cleaned before we got there? The beds were hard! The rooms weren't as quiet as promised; it was easy to hear other guests when they were moving around inside or outside of their rooms.

  • Liked — Convenience to the park.
  • Disliked — cleanliness, noise, beds, staff

Not being picked up at the train depot was a good sign of the service that followed. After calling to find out why no one was there to pick us up, the van was sent. The driver was not at all friendly and was abrupt. No, welcome to Denali, Alaska, nothing. Got to the "resort" and desk person was concerned with the payment for the train depot pick-up. We told him that our tour company had taken care of that. Two more people from the resort questioned again payment. That was our greeting.

We checked in and were given no information of how to actually get around since we didn't have a rental car and found out there was no restaurant at the place. We were shown to our room. Room was great but the rude service and no forthcoming with any helpful information made that least important. We were so frustrated that I called our travel agent when we got to our room. I mentioned that I may have not asked all the right questions but I felt very imtimidated with the smug and unfriendly attitude of the desk person. After I talked with our travel agent, she called the resort. The desk person came to the room to straighten things out. He said we didn't ask about transportation. The questions I had asked, the answers were always, we don't do that...... We told him we didn't know really what to ask and it wasn't easy to communicate. It wasn't until that conversation that we were informed of their taxi service with fee and restaurant at McKinely village, across the street. I would have paid the extra to stay across the street at McKinley Village if the tour company would have given us that option. The McKinley lodge even calls your room to let you know that the Northern Lights are out for viewing!!

The Denali Grizzly Bear Resort web site info NOW is not the same as it was about three weeks ago mentioning this taxi service, limited train depot pick-up and restaurants in the area!

This was the only disappointing part of a wonderful 21/2 week Alaskan adenture. We stayed there three nights. Do not is my advice

  • Liked — the room was new and very nice with the river next to it.

We stayed in the lodge portion for 2 nights on the second floor and loved the room which seemed very new and clean and the balcony view was amazing. Basically the room was perfect.

The hotel was very convenient to the park and actually easy to get to (unfortunately the staff could not tackle explaining that they were off a major highway).

There are no restaurants or food for that matter onsite. Don't count on their "store" for anything. When the store is actually open, the clerk is web surfing and can't be bothered.

I also noticed that most of the staff seem really put out when they had to actually talk to humans, except for the front desk guy who was the exception.

The onsite laundry was convenient

While the room was very clean, apparently I offended the cleaning staff by locking my door and not allowing them to plow into my room at 9am because even being gone all day after that, my room was never cleaned.

Also, forget Internet, the wireless is only available in the store when they are even open and nowhere else.

In summary, if you can handle no internet, no staff interaction and no onsite food options, everything else is perfect.
